Pahrump Town Board Chairman Laurayne Murray picks a name out of a jar held by Paula Glidden, former town board member, at the last August board meeting. It was the first time the new selection process for Fall Festival beer vendors has been used.

The Fall Festival will have three new beer vendors this year now that the Pahrump Town Board approved three local 501(3)(c) organizations that were literally picked out of a jar by board members at the Aug. 28 meeting.

This year the suds will be sold by the Rough Riders, the Pahrump Valley Museum and the Pahrump Senior Center.

The vendors for next year's festival were also chosen at the meeting. American Legion Post 23, the Marine Corps League and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10054 will all be selling cold brews in 2008.

In previous years, the VFW manned the most lucrative booth at the festival.

Last December, however, the VFW disagreed with the Fall Festival Committee over whether they would be allowed to keep all of their profits from previous years' sales.

The town had kept 20 percent of the money earned from beer sales in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Although the VFW reimbursed the town for the cost of beer, energy drinks, cups, and ice, they felt the 20 percent charge unfairly targeted their booth as none of the others vendors was required to pay the fee.

The veterans won that battle, receiving a total of $13,282 back from the town.

However, they also had to reimburse the town for the cost of the beer, energy drinks, cups, and ice, as well as pay Pahrump $3,675 in space rental fees.

Earlier this year the town board approved a new selection process for beer vendors, in which non-profit groups could submit a letter of interest.

The applicants' names were then drawn from a jar at the last board meeting, with each board member choosing one vendor, opening the sealed envelope and reading the winner's name aloud.

Each of the selected groups will be required to sign a contract with the town stating 20 percent of the gross profits will go to Pahrump.
