CLASS 3-A, 1-A VOLLEYBALL County teams to play in regionalsPVT Pahrump Valley will play No. 1-seeded Las Vegas Faith Lutheran at 3 p.m. Friday in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A Regional volleyball tournament Friday. Coach Amy Hart's Lady Trojans, 2-6 in the league, qualified for the playoffs by defeating Boulder City 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 Thursday, and could have had a higher seed if they had been able to knock off No. 2 Moapa Valley in Overton Monday night. Instead, the Pirates defeated the Trojans in a physical, grinding match, 20-25, 25-15, 16-25, 19-25, 15-8. So the pairings in the tournament -- to be played Friday in the Boulder City High School gym -- will be No. 1 Faith Lutheran, 8-0, vs. No. 4 Pahrump Valley, 2-6, at 3 p.m. and No. 2 Moapa Valley, 6-2 vs. No. 3 Boulder City, 3-5, at 5 p.m. The championship match will be at 7 p.m., with both teams advancing to the state tournament, to be played Nov. 9-10 at Silverado High School in Las Vegas. Faith Lutheran is the defending regional champion and lost in the state finals to Yerington last season. The Crusaders, coached by Amy Fisher, swept the league series from the Trojans. In the Northern regionals, first-round pairings Saturday at Truckee, Calif., will be No. 4 Incline, 8-6, vs. No. 5 Dayton, 8-6, at 10 a.m. and No. 3 Fernley, 8-6, vs. No. 6 Winnemucca Lowry, 4-10, at 11:40 a.m.. Drawing byes were No. 1 Truckee, Calif., 14-0, and No. 2 and Yerington, 11-3. The semifinal matches are at 1:20 p.m. and 3 p.m., with the championship to be decided at 5 p.m. The top two teams go to Silverado for the state semifinals Nov. 9. ---- Beatty, Round Mountain and Tonopah are in the Class A regional quarter-finals, to be played Friday at Mountain View Christian High School in Las Vegas. The semifinals and finals are Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. Again, the finaists advance to the state tournament, with the regional champion getting a No. 1 seed. Tentative first-round pairings Friday are No. 1 South Pahranagat Valley Alamo vs. No. 4 Central, either Beatty or Lund, at 6 p.m.; No. 3 South Mountain View Christian vs. No. 2 Central Round Mountain at 3 p.m.; No. 2 South Lake Mead Christian Academy vs. No. 3 Central, either Lund or Beatty, at 4:30 p.m. and No. 4 South Las Vegas Calvary Chapel vs. No. 1 Central Tonopah at 7:30 p.m. Beatty and Lund met in the final regular-season match on the Mustangs' court Tuesday. The match had been delayed a couple times before it was rescheduled. Tonopah defeated Indian Springs 25-12, 25-7 and 25-10, 25-14 to wrap up an undefeated season in Central Division matches Thursday. The Lady Muckers went 10-0 in the division and are 15-2 overall, under the direction of coach Judi Boni. "We will spend a lot of time this week working on serving and passing," said Boni. "The girls have had a hard time with concentration lapses during the season, so we will work on intensity, too." Tonopah is led by 6-foot middle hitter Kristi Glover and serve specialist Brittany Vallarino, as well as senior setter Liz Boni. Glover has 106 kills in 17 matches this season, while Boni has 125 assists for kills. The Northern 1-A regionals are Friday and Saturday at North Valleys High School in Reno, with Coleville (16-0), Eureka (6-6), Virginia City (11-5), Wells (9-3), Reno Sage Ridge (14-2), McDermitt (7-5), Sparks Sierra Lutheran (9-7) and defending state champion Owyhee (12-0) entered. |
