Pahrump Valley's boys and girls soccer teams, if they want to go to the Nevada Class 3-A State tournament in Reno next week, have to go 2-0 in the Southern regionals.

That tournament will be played Thursday and Saturday at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex on the Cimarron-Memorial High School campus in Las Vegas. Only the regional champion will move on to the state semifinals, to be played Nov. 9 at Mackay Stadium on the University of Nevada campus in Reno.

The top three teams from the Northern regionals will qualify for the state tournament. The Northern tournament will be played Thursday through Saturday at the South Valleys Recreation Center in Reno and at Fallon High School in Churchill County.

In the Southern boys' semifinals, Pahrump Valley, 11-3 in league games and seeded No. 2, will play No. 3 Ely White Pine, 7-5-2, at 4 p.m. Wednesday on Field 5. No. 1 Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, 14-0, will take on No. 4 Boulder City, 6-6-2, at 6 p.m. on Field 5.

In the girls semis, it will be No. 2 Boulder City, 5-1-4, vs. Pahrump Valley, 5-2-2, at 4 p.m. on Field 6 and No. 1 Faith Lutheran, 8-0-2, vs. No. 4 White Pine, 3-5-2, at 6 p.m. on Field 6.

The championship games are Saturday at 10 a.m. (boys, Field 9) and 12:30 p.m. (girls, Field 9).

Pahrump Valley won its regular-season finales; the boys, coached by Gene Smith, trounced visiting Mesquite Virgin Valley 5-0, and the girls, with Greg Leseberg in charge, edged the Bulldogs 1-0, in games played Thursday.

A regular-season game against Overton Moapa Valley Monday was canceled, since it had no bearing on the regional pairings.

In the Northern 3-A boys quarterfinals are Truckee, Calif., Spring Creek, Sparks, Battle Mountain, North Tahoe, Winnemucca Lowry, Incline and Dayton. The girls' qualifiers are Truckee, Fernley, Zephyr Cove Whittell, Dayton, North Tahoe, Lowry, Incline and Spring Creek.

First-round games will be played at the South Valleys Regional Park in Reno, with Fallon High School in Churchill County hosting the semifinals and finals in both boys' and girls' tournaments.

Spring Creek's girls were 10-0 in the league and 15-3-1 in all games, after a critical 3-0 win against Zephry Cove Whittell.

North Tahoe's boys, the 2006 state champions, appear to have another powerhouse.

"North Tahoe looke pretty good to me," said Spring Creek coach Ray Smith. "Their shooting isn't as good (as the 2006 team's), but their passing was just as good."

The Class 4-A Sunrise regionals begins today at the Wilson complex, with Henderson Green Valley playing Las Vegas, Henderson Basic taking on Las Vegas Valley, Silverado meeting Rancho, and Del Sol tangling with Eldorado.

The Sunset Regional started Tuesday, with the matchups Western vs. Cheyenne, Sierra Vista vs. Legacy, Bishop Gorman vs. Palo Verde, and Spring Valley vs. Centennial.

The semifinals in both regionals will be played Thursday at Wilson complex. The title games are Saturday (10 a.m. Sunrise), 12:30 p.m. (Sunset).

The Class 4-A boys' soccer tournaments are underway in the North, with Sparks Reed defeating Reno Wooster 3-1, Douglas Minden edging Elko 2-1, South Tahoe stopping Reno McQueen 2-0, and Carson defeating Sparks Spanish Springs 1-0.

The semifinals are Thursday at Damonte Ranch High School in south Reno, with the title game at 2 p.m. Saturday at the same site.
