Family to Family Calendar

The September class schedule for Family to Family Connection, 160 S. Emery, is as follows:

Oct. 31--Parenting class canceled for today.

The Back to Basics Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old).

Play group is at 1 p.m. every Thursday.

Resource Lending Library is open from 9- 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

October food drive

Nevada Federal Credit Union is conducting a "drop and match" food drive during the month of October to benefit the Pahrump Family Resource Center.

Nevada Federal will match each non-perishable food donation dropped off at the branch located at 280 S. Hwy. 160, during regular business hours.

Thanksgiving baskets

The Salvation Army is now accepting applications for the Thanksgiving food baskets and Christmas toys.

Thanksgiving food basket application deadline is Nov. 15, and for Christmas, application deadline is Dec. 15.

Pick up applications 10-3 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the Salvation Army Social Services Office, 240 S. Dahlia St. (next to the Thrift Store).

Veterans Day parade

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10054 is sponsoring a parade on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Benefit sale

K-9 Castle is sponsoring a "howling good sale" to benefit the dogs and to help with "Kuma's" surgery.

There are movies, clothes, furniture and baked goods.

The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a giant rummage sale from 8-4 p.m., Nov. 2 and 8-1 p.m., Nov. 3, 1300 E. Hwy. 372.

Everything from clothing, furniture and appliances to Christmas items will be for sale.

Donations for California

Hay Burner Haven Equine Rescue, the SPCA, animal rescue operations and the people of Nye County have set up a drop point for donations for the animals victimized by the California fires.

Dog beds, old blankets, dog and cat food; both dry and canned, hay, straw, animal feed, salt blocks, buckets, grooming materials, tarps, rakes, shovels, medicines, lead ropes, leashes, mineral oil etc. would be useful and appreciated.

Cash donations are appreciated as well.

Items can be dropped at Shadow Mountain Feed, Wal-Mart, Windrock Feed Store and ACE Hardware.

PVHS Proficiency Exams

Pahrump Valley High School with be having the Proficiency Exams on the following schedule.

Writing Exam for all juniors on Wednesday, Oct. 31. All juniors must take the writing proficiency test on Oct. 31.

We are asking for students to please be in attendance on testing day.

PVHS Food Drive

The Pahrump Valley High School clubs will participate in a canned food drive through Nov. 2.

Food collected will be donated to the Salvation Army for distribution to those in need.

Halloween alternative

Trinity Assembly of God Church is providing a fun and safe alternative to traditional Halloween activities.

The even will be from 5-9 p.m., Oct. 31 at the church located at 750 S. Big Five Road, between 372 and Wilson.

There will be drawings and toy giveaways, games and prizes. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5.

Last year there were 3000 attendees and more are expected this year.

Donations are welcome and can be mailed to the Trinity of God Church at the above address. All donations are tax deductible.

There is no fee for admission to the event.

Halloween Safe Night

The Kiwanis will host a Halloween safe night from 4-8 p.m., Oct. 31 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

There will be game booths provided by local service groups, raffles, food and refreshments for sale and one bag of candy for each child as they leave.

The event is geared for children ages 4-10 and they must be accompanied by an adult.

Entry is free, but tickets must be purchased in order to play games.

Money from the games goes to the service group providing the booth.

Quickbooks training class

The Rural Nevada Development Corp. and the Nevada Small Business Development Center in partnership with Citibank will offer two classes for Quickbooks training at Great Basin Community College.

Beginners workshop is 8-noon, Thursday, Nov. 1. The intermediate workshop will be held 8-noon, Saturday, Nov. 3.

The cost for one session is $35 and the cost of both classes is $50.

Halloween at the library

The Pahrump Community Library will be passing out candy from 6-8 p.m., Oct. 31.

The Pahrump Valley Cruisers will sponsor a "Trunk or Treats" from 4-6 p.m., Oct. 31 at Seemore's Too.

Flu shot clinic

Desert View Regional Medical Center will hold a flu shot clinic from 11-3 p.m., Oct. 31 at the hospital, 360 S. Lola Lane.

The cost of the shot is $20. It is free for Medicare Part B recipients. Check with hospital staff when registering.

Mt. Charleston book fair

Mt. Charleston Elementary School will be having the annual Scholastic Book Fair from 12-2 p.m. through Nov. 1 in the school library.

Animal rescue garage sale

The West Star Ranch Old Dog and Animal Rescue is having a rummage/garage sale from 9-3 p.m., Nov. 1 and 2, at 3091 S. Unicorn Avenue.

Proceeds go to the care, feeding, spaying and neutering of rescued old dogs, cats of all ages and other animals in need.

There will be brand new clothing for all ages and sizes, new gift items, souvenirs, collectables, etc.

Similar items are available at the West Star Thrift Store. The hours are 10-3 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, 780 Manse Road (one block west of Pahrump Valley Boulevard).

Pet food and cash donations are needed as well as volunteers to work in the store and with the animals.

Marie Calandar pies for sale

The Nye County Cinderella Girls are selling Marie Calandar pies for Thanksgiving. The ordering deadline is Nov. 15.

Pies can be picked up at 2 p.m., Nov. 21 in the Pahrump Nugget parking lot.

Junior Master Gardener

The 4-H is currently organizing a Junior Master Gardener group for youth ages 5-19.

Projects will include gardening in the Cooperative Extension Demonstration Garden, propagation, garden and nature related crafts, hydroponics, container gardening and food and nutrition.

Meetings start in November and will be held in the 4-H building located at 1351 E. Calvada Blvd.

Genealogical Society meeting

The Pahrump Genealogical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 1 at the Church of Latter-Day Saints at West Street and Wilson Road.

The speaker will be Paula Gibson on the subject of Canadian research in the Census and other records.

Paula is a long time researcher in New England genealogy and has had breakthrough results using Canadian sources.

Shoshone Old West Days

The annual Shoshone Old West Days will be Nov. 2-4 in the village of Shoshone.

There will be historical presentations, walking tours, crafts, food, entertainment and live music.

The festival opens at 4 p.m., Nov. 2.

The Shoshone Desert Art Show will be the weekend of Nov. 2-4 as well, and features artists from far and near who will come to participate.

The Art and Craft Show is 12- 5 p.m., Nov. 2, 9-5 p.m., Nov. 3 and 9-3 p.m., Nov. 3.

Tuesday classes are Little pups (ages 2-3), 9:15-9:45 a.m.; Red pups (ages 4-5), 10-10:45 a.m.; Big red (ages 5-12 and Kindergarten), 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Wednesday is craft class (5th grade and up), 3:15-4:15 p.m.

Movie Day is canceled this month due to the holiday weekend.

The Disabled American Veterans will hold the monthly dinner from 5-7 p.m., Nov. 2 at the VFW Post 10054, 4651 S. Homestead Road.

All proceeds go to aiding community disabled vets.

United Way banquet

The United Way of Pioneer Territory will present the 9th annual Cheers for Volunteers banquet at 6 p.m., Nov. 2 in the Saddle West convention center.

Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.

Black tie is suggested.

Tickets are $30 per person or $240 for a table of eight.

The celebration provides an opportunity for government, social service, nonprofit groups and private companies and citizens to nominate a special person or group for the Golden Heart Community Service Award.

Computer Users meeting

The Pahrump Computer Users will meet at 1 p.m., Nov. 5 in the Pahrump Community Library meeting room.

The program this month is "How to Create Streaming Video."

This presentation will be captured and displayed in real time during the meeting.

Viruses, worms and malware will be discussed. The definition of "firewall" and how to use one to protect a computer is also a part of the program.
