Skate park will be improved, $10G donation

Skaters will be happy to know they don't have to worry about eating gravel after grinding a rail anymore thanks to the Kiwanis Club.

The skate park is located at Honeysuckle Park.

The club raised $10,000 to help extend the concrete flatwork around the back edge and side, which has a gravel buffer.

That means when ambitious and daring skaters wipe out, they land in a pile of small rocks and dirt.

The Pahrump Town Board approved a proposal by Canyon Concrete for $10,605 to add eight feet around the edge of the park and 11 feet of concrete in the back.

Canyon Concrete will donate the $605 worth of work that exceeds the Kiwanis' $10,000.

Some gravel will remain, however, in preparation for the future installation of lighting.

Initially, the board wanted to approve a second proposal that was submitted by PB Concrete, even though the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board had approved the Canyon Concrete bid.

After a 10 percent donation, the PB Concrete bid appeared to be cheaper at $9,247.50. However, public comment contributed to that motion's ultimately failing.

Jose Telles informed the board that Canyon Concrete did the main slab at the Pahrump Veteran's Memorial and staunchly advocated their work.

Vicky Parker pointed out that Canyon Concrete was local, to which Harley Kulkin followed up with a comment urging the board to "keep the local guys working."

Kulkin also pointed out that an out-of-state contractor might be less able or willing to make good on a warranty should the concrete crack.
