CHARITY FOOTBALL GAME AT PVHS Association outruns the cops
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT The Nye County Sports Association triumphed over the Nye County Sheriff's Office 34-0 victory in the second annual "Cops and Jocks" Safe Place fundraiser at Pahrump Valley High School Saturday. But since both sides were playing flag football to raise money for the local branch of the national organization that helps teens in trouble, it's the local youth who are the real winners. The event raised $375 in donations for the organization as residents filed in to see local law enforcement take on the NCSA volunteers and school district employees on the gridiron. SafePlace provides public locations where teens in crisis can get immediate assistance such as toiletries, food vouchers, shelter, crisis intervention, job placement, or weather-appropriate clothing. The program is aimed at youths from ages 12 to 18 who are without a parent or guardian, or who feel they may be in immediate danger. The game helped to raise funds for the program through donations and selling nachos and T-shirts. The NCSA team, known as "the Jocks," was made up of a variety of volunteer players, including Mt. Charleston Elementary principal Tim Wombaker and third-grade teacher Lance Englund, who is also an assistant coach in basketball at the high school. The Trojans' interim football coach, Roy Goddell, was the quarterback for the Jocks. The sheriff's office team included Dep. Daryl Taylor, as well as several PVHS Trojans, but they ultimately were unable to answer the Jocks. The NCSA is a non-profit organization that focuses on drug and alcohol abuse prevention for local youths. They also help sponsor organizations for kids who are too young to play for school teams, such as the fourth- and fifth grade Jr. Trojans football team. "We want to make sure that every child that wants to play a sport gets to play," Dawn Lewis said. Dawn is the wife of the NCSA's director, Courtney Lewis. The association is currently seeking a location for kids to practice and play sports, as well as any support the community can offer. People interested in helping the NCSA should contact Courtney Lewis at 727-7651. |
