FISHING
EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR Fishing pressure has dropped along with the temperatures, but one die-hard fisherman reeled in his five-trout limit in less than two hours. Leon Simon was using small, silver Kastmaster that he reeled in slowly and then let it flutter down so it looked like an injured minnow. Both rainbow and tiger trout are active. Super Dupers, Panther Martins and Mepp's Spinners are good hardware options. Mini marshmallows combined with worms can be a productive bait choice. ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR Despite low water levels, anglers can still catch a mess of rainbow trout. Anglers may want to give rainbow PowerBait, small spinners or worms a try. LAKE MEAD Stripers have been providing anglers with top-water action in the Vegas Wash area, though overall the fishing has been slow. Some anglers have been reeling in a few fish along the tires outside of Lake Mead Marina and Hemenway Harbor as well as along the beaches. Anglers fishing out of Echo Bay have been reeling in stripers, catfish and some smallmouth bass. Striped bass have been biting anchovies, sardines and hardware. A mid-diving silver and black minnow pattern trolled or cast has been productive. For catfish, try anchovies or stinkbait fished on the bottom. LAKE MOHAVE Anglers have found some success for rainbow trout while fishing below the hatchery at Willow Beach. One fisherman reeled in a 20-inch rainbow that he caught on PowerBait. The fish have been biting during the early morning hours, but the bite shuts off completely by 11 a.m. High winds in recent days have made fishing an uncomfortable experience. In the lake's southern reaches anglers have found success for stripers, catfish and even largemouth bass. Stillfishing and trolling have both produced fish. WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA Some of the best fishing action of the year will be found at Kirch between now and ice-up. Plump rainbows measuring up to 20 inches have been taking spinners, spoons, PowerBait or worms. With the waterfowl hunting season underway, anglers have the opportunity to put both fish and fowl on the table. URBAN PONDS Recent catfish plants should provide fishermen with plenty of opportunity to reel in a few of the whisker fish from each of the five urban ponds. They can be found at Floyd Lamb Park, Lorenzi Park, Sunset Park, Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City, and at Hafen Park in Mesquite. Try stinkbait, shrimp or night crawlers fished on the bottom. For bluegill fish with mealworms suspended below a bobber or try small fly patterns. |
