Deputies chase dump truck; dump truck chases deputiesEVENTS RESEMBLE 'DUKES OF HAZZARD' ROUTINE
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Sometimes it doesn't take a whole lot of action to break a litany of laws, as Jerrod Noble, 32, discovered Monday, Oct. 22. He was arrested that day and booked on a charge of battery on a police officer and possession of a stolen vehicle. But not before he accumulated a host of alleged traffic violations and leading sheriff's deputies on a roundabout chase. It all started when Street Crime Unit deputies were driving behind a dump truck eastbound on Mesquite Avenue. When the dump truck slowed to turn onto Barney Street, the deputies noticed the truck's brake lights didn't work. The officers switched on their red and blue flashing lights and their headlights, but Noble didn't pull over, instead turning eastbound onto Blosser Ranch Road. This added eluding a police officer to the potential brake light citation. As they drove behind the truck, the officers noticed Noble looking at them several times through his driver's side mirror as the officers motioned for him to pull over. A quick check of the license plates revealed that they actually belonged on a 1998 Ford crew cab pick-up truck, putting fictitious license plate to the growing list of violations. At this point, while still driving, Noble lifted the rear of the dump truck, causing a load of pieces of steel approximately 10 feet long to fall in front of the cruiser in what the sheriff's office reported as "an attempt to stop their pursuit of him." When that ploy didn't work and the driver reached a 2500 address on Blosser Ranch Road, Noble allegedly stopped the truck and then began to backup toward the deputies' cruiser. Dep. Jonas, who was driving, put the cruiser in reverse in an attempt to avoid getting hit but Noble still managed to ram into the deputy's front passenger side bumper. After that, the dump truck continued to travel east on Blosser Ranch Road and turned northbound on Woodchips Street. At Woodchips Street and Larson Road, Noble once again began to back up toward the deputies. To keep from being crunched, Jonas maneuvered off the west side of the roadway and ended up passing the dump truck. In a twist reminiscent of "Dukes of Hazzard," the dump truck was now chasing the cruiser. Noble turned eastbound on Scales Avenue, crossing Leslie Road and then Davis Street, finally turning onto Linda Street and traveling north until reaching Bunarch Avenue and then heading east. Noble pulled into a residence at Bunarch Avenue and attempted to flee on foot towards Gally Street. Deps. Williams and Jonas chased after him until Williams caught up to Noble and ordered him to the ground. Ironically, after all that, Noble was handcuffed without incident. However, he told the officer searching him his name was Kevin Brainbridge. Later, he said his name was Chris Brainbridge. Finally, after getting searched and being stood up, Noble admitted to his true identity and was taken to the Nye County Detention Center. He is being held on $41,125 bail. |
