Town board tackles detention center, veterans memorial

The Pahrump Town Board will tackle several items of interest at its next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23.

One path to economic development is getting more residents to live in a growing community.

The town has taken an alternative approach to this tactic and expressed its support for inviting 1,500 federal inmates to stay in a proposed detention center right here in town.

GEO Group, one of several corporations that have expressed interest in building a detention center in Pahrump, is sponsoring two items on the agenda for the next meeting.

The county commissioners rezoned a town-owned site located on Parque Avenue as a community facility use district last July. The site is a 40-acre lot a half mile east of Blagg Road.

The zoning approval came in spite of the Regional Planning Commission's opposition due to a lack of infrastructure.

The board will consider a request by GEO Group to conduct soils studies and survey work to prepare for a proposal to build the facility there, as well as consider authorization to sign a conditional use permit application for the property.

In addition, the town's decision-makers will discuss and decide whether to solicit proposals to create a list of certified commercial appraisers to conduct appraisals on the site.

The many veterans who have rallied to fight the Pahrump Veterans Memorial museum battle will be interested to know a liaison is scheduled to be appointed to the memorial advisory board.

Seven advisory board members and two alternates were appointed at last Tuesday's meeting, although the appointment of Jenny Liakopoulos as a volunteer museum curator (she was the only applicant) failed after the majority of meeting attendees expressed their disagreement.

The question of whether the memorial will even have a museum remains undecided by the board.

A liaison will also be appointed to the Pahrump Alliance Valley Economic Development nonprofit corporation, the group working to facilitate the future development of the proposed fairgrounds, now known as the Pahrump Arts and Recreation Center.

So far, the board has approved Leisure and Recreations Concepts to develop a master plan for the two proposed theme parks to be located on the site.

In short, PAVED is working with LARC to create PARC, and a lucky town board member will be along for the ride.

The often ignored and under-represented younger population of Pahrump, particularly those who are skaters, will be happy to know the board will consider additional concrete flatwork to be added to the Justin Leavitt Skate Park.
