After being the most hunted man in the nation for nearly a month, Chester Stiles' first court appearance in Las Vegas to be arraigned for 23 felony charges filed by the state lasted only about two minutes.

Stiles is the man suspected of videotaping himself sexually assaulting a 2-year-old girl in Las Vegas in 2004.

The videotape that led to his arrest was found in Pahrump by a man who is charged for possession of child pornography but is not suspected of being involved with Stiles.

Security at the courthouse was reportedly tight due to death threats leveled against Stiles.

Stiles reportedly did not enter a plea at the arraignment, only speaking to answer, "No ma'am," when Judge Deborah Lippis asked if he could afford a lawyer.

The judge appointed public defender Jeff Banks to defend Stiles.

Stiles waived a reading of the long list of charges, which include 10 counts of lewdness with, 11 counts of sexual assault, one count of attempted sexual assault, all with a child under the age of 14. He is also facing an additional charge of use of a minor in producing pornography.

One of the charges is from a 2004 case in which Stiles is alleged to have molested a 6-year-old girl.

Banks reportedly told reporters outside the courtroom, "Of course he's going to plead not guilty."

Conviction of the charges could mean lifetime imprisonment for Stiles.

And those are just the charges Stiles is facing from Nevada.

On a federal level, the U.S. attorney unsealed an indictment against Stiles that is completely separate from his Clark County and Nevada charges.

The federal grand jury indictment is for producing child pornography and carries a sentence of 15 to 30 years imprisonment and a fine up to $250,000.

Stiles' state charges will be tried first.

The victim of the videotaped assault, now 7, was found safe and sound with her mother in Las Vegas Sept. 28.

The mother of the girl said she was not aware of the assault when it occurred.

Speaking through her attorney, Jerry Donohue, the mother reportedly suffered from mixed feelings of being glad Stiles was no longer on the street but being disappointed he didn't make good on an alleged vow to never be taken alive by law enforcement officials.

Donohue also told the media the girl had no memory of being molested and has been interviewed by medical professionals as well as police.

The video was turned over to the Nye County Sheriff's Office by Darrin Tuck Jr., 26, a Pahrump resident who said he found the tape in the desert.

Tuck is in custody and will appear in Pahrump Justice Court to face a single charge of possession of child pornography Oct. 22.
