FBI issues identity theft warningPVT
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a warning regarding a jury duty scam leading to identity theft. The recent surge is being perpetrated by telephone when someone calls the intended victim and claims to be a jury coordinator. The intended victim is told they have missed jury duty. When the victim states no receipt of any notice for jury duty, they are asked for a Social Security number and a date of birth to "verify" information and are told the information is needed in order to cancel a posted arrest warrant. Compliance gives the scammer enough information to effectively steal identity. Information is available at www.fbi.gov/page2/june06/jury_scams060206.htm or call Jonathan Sherwood, 866-773-0433. |
