PV 0-5 IN LEAGUE MATCHES Trojan spikers face ousterSUB HEAD
By DON McDERMOTT
Pahrump Valley, facing elimination from the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League volleyball playoffs for the first time in more than 10 years, played at Mesquite Virgin Valley Tuesday night. Coach Amy Hart's Lady Trojans fell to 0-5 in the league after bowing 25-20, 25-13, 25-14 to defending league and regional champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran Friday, during PVHS's Homecoming celebration. Pahrump Valley needs to win its final three 3-A matches to have any kind of shot at qualifying for the regionals, to be played Nov. 2 at Boulder City. The pairings will be No. 1 seed vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3. The top two teams will advance to the state tournament, to be played Nov. 9-10 at Silverado High School in Las Vegas. Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley won in five sets in their first battles with PVHS, while Boulder City prevailed 3-0. That Virgin Valley win ended a 54-match losing streak by the Bulldogs. The Trojans play at the Granite Hills Invitational in El Cajon, Calif., Friday and Saturday, then close out the league season Oct. 25 at Boulder City and at Moapa Valley Oct. 29. Coach Amy Fisher's Lady Crusaders trailed 3-0, 7-3 and 8-5, before Pahrump Valley's persistent pressure forced an 18-18 tie and eventually a 19-18 lead. A line violation and an unforced error pushed the Crusaders ahead 20-19. Andrea Jolls, a sophomore hitter, served two aces before another misplay and a kill by Hayley Washinski closed out the first game for Faith Lutheran. The Trojans led 1-0 in Game Two, but surrendered 10 of the next 15 points, with four kill attempts by the Trojans either sailing out of bounds or into the net to aid that rally. Pahrump Valley trailed 12-8 before the Crusaders went on a 13-5 rush to give them the win. In Game Three, the Trojans fought back from a 5-0 deficit to take a 7-6 lead. Faith Lutheran scored 10 of the next 12 points to assume an advantage that was never threatened. |
