Blood drive The Pahrump Valley High School blood drive will be 7:30-1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17 in the gymnasium. Poetry series Poetry and coffee at Lois Layne's Deli is an ongoing poetry series alternating between reading from works of the great poets, and open mike. Family to Family Calendar The September class schedule for Family to Family Connection, 160 S. Emery, is as follows: Oct. 17--H/S Science fair, 11 a.m. Oct. 18--Family vehicle safety class, 3:45 p.m. Registration and fee required. Oct. 22--Family vehicle safety class, Spanish only, 1 p.m. Registration and fee required. Oct. 23--Halloween safety tips/activity, 2 p.m. Oct. 26--Closed for Nevada Day. Oct. 30--Breast feeding basics, 11 a.m. Oct. 31--Parenting class canceled for today. The Back to Basics Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old). Play group is at 1 p.m. every Thursday. Resource Lending Library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Safe Place fundraiser Safe Place is having the 2nd annual "Cops and Jocks" fundraiser at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 20 at the PVHS football field. Help the youth in Pahrump by cheering for the Nye County Sheriff's Office and the Nye County Sports Association. The PVHS band will lead the program featuring the Pop Warner Cheerleaders, ROTC Color Guard, the Sharks, the Rush, the Trojans, the Salvation Army Color Guard, Boy and Girl Scout Troop 216, Pack 808, Troop 808, Miss Nevada Pre-teen, Jordan McCutcheon and much more. A variety of foods, snacks and drinks will be available. Tickets are $6, or bring canned foods to benefit the Salvation Army Thanksgiving Food Basket program and receive $1 off. Sporting Goods Store, 2220 Nevada West Blvd, Suite 4, and PVHS band members. Safe Place provides sites in public places where youth in crises can get immediate help and support. Kiwanis yard sale The Kiwanis will have a yard sale from 7:30-2:30 p.m., Oct. 20, at the Bob Ruud Community Center under the canopy in the parking lot. Donations will be accepted up to the date of the sale. If you need it picked up, call Marianne at 209-3752. All proceeds benefit local children and seniors in Pahrump. AGLOW meeting AGLOW is an interdenominational, international Christian women's organization that provides opportunity for women to grow in faith and administer to others. Celebrate AGLOW's third year in Pahrump with guest speaker Debi William from 9:30-11:30 a.m., Oct. 20 at Water from the Rock Church, 1370 E. Matthew Lane, across from Smith's. Child care is provided. For more information call Jacquie Freeman at 727-5181. Pumpkin painting party Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will host a pumpkin painting party from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20. Pumpkins will be painted to take home and some will be painted for auction at the church. Snacks and drinks will be served during the event. The party is open to children 3 and up and the older children will be able to carve their pumpkins. Call to notify the church how many children you are bringing and their ages so they will know how many pumpkins to make available. The church is located at 1300 E. Hwy. 372. Ladies luncheon and program The Pahrump "Ladies Day Out Luncheon" will be held 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Oct. 20 at the Elks Lodge, 2220 E. Basin Avenue. A program will be presented including a fashion show by Patti's Sunflower Fashions. Talented Jo Langley, 11, is scheduled to sing. Guest speaker, Karen Gunderson, a former executive secretary, real estate broker and high school teacher will make a presentation of her life story. The luncheon is $10 per person. October food drive Nevada Federal Credit Union is conducting a "drop and match" food drive during the month of October to benefit the Pahrump Family Resource Center. Nevada Federal will match each non-perishable food donation dropped off at the branch located at 280 S. Hwy. 160, during regular business hours. Laureate Omicron The Laureate Omicron Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi meeting begins at 1 p.m., Oct. 22 in the home of Lois Heyer who will also present the cultural program on wild flowers. The fall flower table arrangement will be designed Oct. 16, at the home of Betty West and delivered to Evergreen Nursing Home. Domestic violence The interfaith Domestic Violence Taskforce and No to Abuse will hold a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m., Oct. 25 at Pahrump Family Mortuary, 5441 Vicki Ann Road. The vigil is to celebrate those who have survived domestic violence and remember those who have died. No to Abuse is a domestic violence agency serving Nye, Esmeralda and Lincoln counties providing shelter, advocacy and support for victims of domestic violence. TOPS yard sale The TOPS annual yard sale will be 8-4 p.m., Oct. 26-27, 2640 N. Trudy St. (Hwy. 160 and Blosser Ranch Road). TOPS is a nonprofit organization and proceeds benefit local programs. BSW Program offered Great Basin College and the University of Nevada Reno have partnered in a "3+1" Bachelor of Social Work program offered on the Great Basin College campus. The baccalaureate program offers course work and field studies preparing individuals committed to the elimination of poverty, oppression and injustice for a professional career. Persons interested in the program can learn more by meeting with the Program Director, Wendy Charlabois from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Great Basin College campus, 551 E. NTS workers open house Professional Case Management is having an open house in Pahrump from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Oct. 24 at the Pahrump Nugget Hotel and Gambling Hall in the private dining room of the Stockman's Steakhouse. Professional Case Management provides in-home nursing care to Nevada Test Site workers who developed an illness after working at the site and is for those workers who could benefit with in-home nursing services. AARP driver safety The AARP Driver Safety Program is a two day class being held from 9:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m., Oct. 24 and 25. Taking the class may result in auto insurance discounts. Parent/teacher conferences Parent/teacher conferences and a "Drive for the Kids" fundraiser hosted by Saitta-Trudeau, will be held at J. G. Johnson Elementary School on Oct. 24. More information about these events will be sent home with the students within the next two weeks. Toys for Tots The Marine Corps League, Pahrump Detachment 1199 partners with the Marine Corps Reserve to support Toys for Tots. Toys for Tots will collect new, unwrapped toys from donation boxes at our local businesses to distribute to children in Nye County. Collection boxes will be located in nearly 40 locations including Ace Hardware, WalMart, Albertson's, Smith's, CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens.
