CLASS A FOOTBALL Beatty at home to battle Knights
By DON McDERMOTT
Beatty celebrates Homecoming tonight, facing Nye County and Central Division Class A rival Round Mountain. Kickoff is at 7 for the game between the Hornets, 3-3, and Knights, 0-6. Homecoming ceremonies conclude with the crowing of the queen and king at halftime. But events have been ongoing all week and include a parade today. The Beatty High School band will reveal its new uniforms today. Beatty is coming off a 34-14 loss to Indian Springs, but the results might have been different if the Hornets had been able to score on their first possession, said coach Gus Sullivan. "We marched right down the field and had the ball at the 3-yard line," said Sullivan. "We were really hyped up for the game ... but Indian Springs made the adjustments and stopped us. If we had been able to score, who knows what might have happened." ---- The Tonopah High School football will experience a special event Saturday, when the Muckers travel to St. George, Utah to play Beaver Dam of Littlefield, Ariz. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. (MT) on the artificial turf of the Dixie High School field. The Muckers are 5-1 in all games, 2-0 in the Class A Central Division after their 56-2 conquest of Nye County rival Round Mountain at the Tonopah Homecoming Friday. Beaver Dam's Diamondbacks are 1-3, with two games not reported. Coach Brent Williams' team defeated Abundant Life Academy of Kanab, Utah, 36-24, after it lost 42-8 to Las Vegas The Meadows, 44-36 to Spring Mountain and 48-21 to Diamond Creek School of Australia. Beaver Dam has games remaining against Trona, Calif. and Las Vegas Agassi Prep. "The boys are looking forward to the trip," said Curt McElroy, the Muckers' coach, whose team is now 2-0 in the eight-man football Central Division after its victory against the Knights (0-2, 0-6). It was the Muckers' final regular-season game at home. Their last two division games are on the road -- at Beatty Oct. 19 and at Indian Springs Oct. 26. The state playoffs begin on the weekend of Nov. 2-3. "We played Mucker football (against Round Mountain)," said McElroy. "Our defense had another shutout. "I couldn't be prouder of this team; we had great balance, with everyone on the team contributing in some form," said the coach. Round Mountain got its points on a safety, while the Knights' offense was limited to 89 yards, including minus-seven rushing. Mike Dolfin was in on 16 tackles, including six solo stops, and he had one fumble recovery for a touchdown. Ryan Misener, Chance Gibson and Kevin Valentine combined for 16 tackles. Misener and Valentine had interceptions, while Gibson had two sacks for minus-14 yards. Offensively, the Muckers accumulated 350 yards, including 301 rushing. Steven Carnell had three touchdowns as he gained 85 yards on just six attempts. His TDs came on runs of 4, 10 and 69 yards. Valentine carried seven times for 102 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Scott Thibodeaux, running the Muckers' shotgun-option offense, gained 62 yards and scored a TD in six attempts. Backup quarterback Sal Falcon crashed in from three yards out for a TD. Denver Otteson gained 22 yards on six rushes, while Armilio Arias had nine yards on two carries. Thibodeaux was 3-for-5 for 18 yards, including a five-yard scoring pass to Tyler Bessire (five catches, 38 yards). Valentine had one reception for 11 yards. Tonopah is tied with Indian Springs (2-0, 5-2) for first place in the Central Division. |
