WASHINGTON -- Enough, already, with compassion for society's middle and lower orders. There currently is a sympathy deficit regarding the very rich. Or so the rich might argue because they bear the heavy burden of spending enough to keep today's plutonomy humming. Personal responsibility? Yeah, sure One of the best rhetorical planks of the modern American right-wing movement has been insistence on individual responsibility. Maybe some things are useless, maybe they're not How many times have you looked at something and wondered if it actually had a purpose? Some things seem to exist for no good reason.
