Vogues perform in Pahrump
By CHARLENE DEAN
Back in 1960, four "boys" from Turtle Creek, Penn. formed a vocal group with clean, tight harmony and created a fresh sound that left an indelible mark on the world of music. Originally, the group called themselves the "Val-Airs" until they signed with a record label and their name changed to "The Vogues" and reasonably so...Webster defines "vogue" as "the mode...of general acceptance at any given time" or "general favor or acceptance." Their hit, "You're the One" was released in 1965, rose to number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and the group was instantly "in vogue." Other hits, "Turn Around, Look at Me", "Special Angel" and "No, Not Much" kept them periodically in the limelight until 1970. Their song, "5 O'Clock World" was revived to popularity as the theme song for "The Drew Carey Show" in the late '90s. The group has changed members over the years and recently the original first tenor, Hugh Geyer, has returned to the fold. His voice was a major stabilizer for The Vogues "sound" and after a 34 year absence, they are glad to have him back. The group has toured the US, England and Australia and they've been "honored in most national and international polls as one of the best vocal groups on the scene." In 2001, The Vogues were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. The group is still performing to sell-out crowds and they are coming to town this weekend. Show times are 6 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 13 on the stage in the lounge at the Pahrump Nugget. The venue is free and open to the public.
