Junior Master Gardener

The 4-H is currently organizing a Junior Master Gardener group for youth ages 5-19.

Projects will include gardening in the Cooperative Extension Demonstration Garden, propagation, garden and nature related crafts, hydroponics, container gardening and food and nutrition.

Elks Soccer Shoot

SNAPS charity sale

SNAPS will hold a charity "garage sale" from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Oct. 12 and 13 at 2061 Gamebird Road.

NDOT workshop

Amargosa Outing

The Amargosa Conservancy will have the second outing of the series Oct. 13 to the Tecopa basin.

The group will meet at the Amargosa Conservancy office at 9:30 a.m. This is a driving tour through the human and natural history of the ice age lake basin and includes 10 stops, all within walking distance of the points of interest.

This tour is classified as full day, easy walking, 1 to 2 miles.

Outings are free, but suggested donations are $20 for half-day and $30 to $50 for full day excursions.

Pahrump Community Library is offering fine amnesty the week of Oct. 8-13.

Fines will be removed from overdue items returned, no questions asked.

Amnesty does not include fines accumulated on already returned items.

"Shadow Your Future"

The Soroptimists International Pahrump Valley "Shadow Your Future Program" is a two-part program for junior and senior high school girls. It will give the young women a chance to spend the day shadowing a woman in a career field the girl might want to pursue.

The first day of the event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14. The girls will meet at CC's Beauty Zone and learn the basics of career success. The seminar includes resume writing, grooming and makeup, table manners and the simple but powerful handshake.

The second day starts with a light continental breakfast at the Charleston Peak RV Park clubhouse from 7 to 8 a.m. The girls will be introduced to mentors and head out for a day of "shadowing."

Applications are available at the high school and at CC's Beauty Zone, 1231 E. Basin Avenue, Suite 3.

Space is limited to 20 participants.

United Way Oktoberfest

The 6th annual Oktoberfest for the United Way will be from 2 p.m. to dusk on Oct. 13 at Honeysuckle Park.

Bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, hot dogs for the kids and beer, sodas and water will be for sale.

Entertainment includes live German music, a best looking beer stein contest and a wet T-shirt contest.

Free vendor spaces are available.

Picnic tables are available but bringing chairs is encouraged.

Pet Adoptions

Hollywood Video and Nye County animal shelter volunteers will be hosting pet adoptions for pets who need loving homes.

The event is scheduled for the second Saturday of each month and will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 13.

Adoption fees for dogs and puppies is $64, and includes spay/neuter, rabies vaccination and one-year county license.

For cats and kittens, the fee is $36, and includes spay/neuter and rabies vaccination.

Well owners meeting

The Nye County Well Owners Association will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 22 at the Pahrump Community Library to discuss recent questionable legislature.

The meeting is to help fight the action and participation is needed. All well owners and users should attend.

Safe Place fundraiser

Safe Place is having the 2nd annual "Cops and Jocks" fundraiser at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 20 at the PVHS football field.

Help the youth in Pahrump by cheering for the Nye County Sheriff's Office and the Nye County Sports Association.

The PVHS band will lead the program featuring the Pop Warner Cheerleaders, ROTC Color Guard, the Sharks, the Rush, the Trojans, the Salvation Army Color Guard, Boy and Girl Scout Troop 216, Pack 808, Troop 808, Miss Nevada Pre-teen, Jordan McCutcheon and much more.

A variety of foods, snacks and drinks will be available.

Tickets are $6, or bring canned foods to benefit the Salvation Army Thanksgiving Food Basket program and receive $1 off.

Nye County Democrats

The Nye County Democratic Club meets the second Monday of every month at 7 p.m. in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Art installation

PAC Galleries and the Pahrump Community Library present "One Woman Show-The Art of Karen Koop-Browning." The installation was Oct. 5.

Browning is well known for her portrayal of Native American and southwestern art and wildlife paintings.

The brilliant color, fine detail and life content are a draw to her paintings.

A reception to honor the artist will be from 1-3 p.m., Oct. 12.

It is free and open to the public.

Pumpkin painting party

Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will host a pumpkin painting party from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20.

Pumpkins will be painted to take home and some will be painted for auction at the church.

Snacks and drinks will be served during the event.

The party is open to children 3 and up and the older children will be able to carve their pumpkins.

Please call to notify the church how many children you are bringing and their ages so they will know how many pumpkins to make available.

Social dance class

A social dance class is forming. The first meeting is at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 18 at the Artesia Community Center on Fox Avenue.

This will be a beginning class focusing on lead and follow techniques so people can have more fun when they go out to dance.

Dances will be determined by popularity however a selection of waltz, rhumba, cha-cha, swing and Argentine Tango will be offered.

DAV mobile service

So many veterans feel confused about the benefits and services earned. There is much to know and so many changes from one year to the next.

The DAV Mobile Service Office will be available from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m., Oct. 19 at the DAV chapter home, VFW Post #10054, 4651 S. Homestead Road, to help veterans and their families with counseling and claim filing assistance.

The service is free to veterans and their families.

Youth drum circle

Registration is now open for the youth drum circle classes for ages 12 to 18.

The Positive Action/Life Skills class is required.

Classes start Oct. 25.

Recital concert will be at Mandalay Bay House of Blues.

Guest instructors will be from Sengal and the Cirque de Soleil.

NTS workers open house

Professional Case Management is having an open house in Pahrump from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Oct. 24 at the Pahrump Nugget Hotel and Gambling Hall in the private dining room of the Stockman's Steakhouse.

Professional Case Management provides in-home nursing care to Nevada Test Site workers who developed an illness after working at the site and is for those workers who could benefit with in-home nursing services.

Baptist Fall Festival

First Southern Baptist Church will hold an annual Fall Festival from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 27 at the church, 741 E. Fehrs Way (corner of Fehrs Way and Highway 160).

The event is for children 2 years old to 5th grade. It is a fun safe evening of games, activities and opportunities to "win" candy.

Quickbooks training class

The Rural Nevada Development Corp. and the Nevada Small Business Development Center in partnership with Citibank will offer two classes for Quickbooks training at Great Basin Community College.

Beginners workshop is 8 a.m.-noon Thursday, Nov. 1. The intermediate workshop will be held 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 3.

The cost for one session is $35 and the cost of both classes is $50.

Halloween alternative

Trinity Assembly of God Church is providing a fun and safe alternative to traditional Halloween activities.

The even will be from 5-9 p.m., Oct. 31 at the church located at 750 S. Big Five Road, between 372 and Wilson.

There will be drawings and toy giveaways, games and prizes. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or outside WalMart Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13, and Friday, Oct. 19.

Last year there were 3000 attendees and more are expected this year.

Donations are welcome and can be mailed to the Trinity of God Church at the above address. All donations are tax deductible.

There is no fee for admission to the event.

Host families/reps needed

Into Edventures is currently looking for host families in the local area to host a foreign exchange student. These young ambassadors are all between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age and all speak English.

Student profiles will begin arriving in January for students from a variety of countries. They come with their own medical insurance and spending money.

Into Edventures is also looking for individuals to work as area representatives. Reps are needed to find host families and work with students and their families during placement. Individuals must enjoy teenagers and have good communication skills.

Friends of the Library

Jewelry sale and tea

Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 650 S. Blagg, will hold a gently used jewelry sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 13. All proceeds will go to No To Abuse and matched by a grant from Thrivent Financial.

Pahrump Valley's Victorian Ladies will be in period dresses serving tea during the jewelry sale.

Vision impaired meeting

The Pahrump Valley Chapter of Vision Impaired Persons will hold a monthly meeting at 1 p.m., Oct. 16 at the Pahrump Senior Center, 1370 W. Basin Road.

The meetings provide interaction and information for individuals with difficulty seeing or suffer from degenerative vision loss.

Parent/teacher conferences and a "Drive for the Kids" fundraiser hosted by Saitta-Trudeau, will be held at J. G. Johnson Elementary School on Oct. 24.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is a two day class being held from 9:15 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 24 and 25.

BSW Program offered

Great Basin College and the University of Nevada Reno have partnered in a "3+1" Bachelor of Social Work program offered on the Great Basin College campus.

The baccalaureate program offers course work and field studies preparing individuals committed to the elimination of poverty, oppression and injustice for a professional career.

Science share

The LDS Pahrump Homeschoolers are hosting a "Super Science Share" 12 noon until 2 p.m. on Wednesday Oct. 17 at Family to Family Connection.

Poetry and coffee at Lois Layne's Deli is an ongoing poetry series alternating between reading from works of the great poets, and open mike.

Shooting sports training

Southern Nye County 4-H is currently looking for adults to become certified in various types of shooting sport disciplines and to help organize a shooting sports program for youth.

October food drive

Nevada Federal Credit Union is conducting a "drop and match" food drive during the month of October to benefit the Pahrump Family Resource Center.

Recognition Dinner

The Nye County Democrats will hold their first annual Recognition Dinner beginning at 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Pahrump Nugget. A no host bar will be available at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

Jack Carter, Jill Derby, Mike Gravel and Vincent Panvini will be featured speakers.

Chautauqua on WWII

PAC, the Pahrump Valley Museum, and the Nevada Humanities will present "Chautauqua-WWII: War was Hell" at 6 p.m., Oct. 19 and 20 at the Pahrump Valley Winery amphitheater.

Scholars Doug Mischler and Doris Dwyer portray war correspondents, Ernie Pyle and Margaret Bourke-White.

PVHS ROTC will present the colors and Dancin'Step Follies will perform a tribute to service people.

The evening is dedicated to Col. (ret) Bill Burns and all military personnel of Pahrump.

Background music will be from the '40s, so dress the style of the times if you can.
