NYE COUNTY FOOTBALL Trojans in 3-A loss; Hornets in setback
By DON McDERMOTT
Pahrump Valley celebrates Homecoming this week, capped by the Trojans' Southern Nevada Class 3-A League football game Friday against Las Vegas Faith Lutheran. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. for the battle between the Trojans, 0-5-1 after their 50-0 loss to visiting Mesquite Virgin Valley in their league opener Friday, and the Crusaders, 4-3 in all games, 0-2 in 3-A after falling 42-0 to Overton Moapa Valley. For both teams, it is a critical confrontation. Pahrump Valley, playing its final home game of the season, can ill afford to drop to 0-2 in the league, with Moapa Valley its next opponent Oct. 19 at Overton. The regular-season finale is Oct. 25 at Boulder City. The top four teams in the five-team Southern League advance to the 3-A regionals Nov. 2-3. Last season, the Trojans were winless in the league until they defeated Boulder City in the final week to earn a playoff berth at 1-3 in the league, 3-6 in all games. Boulder City finished 0-4 against league rivals. Faith Lutheran plays Boulder City Oct. 19 in its final league contest. The Eagles are 0-1 in the league, 2-4 in all games as they prepare to go to Virgin Valley, 6-1, 2-0 league. Boulder City lost 29-15 to Class 4-A Las Vegas Bonanza in a non-league game Friday. Doug Hafen threw four touchdown passes to spark the Virgin Valley offense, which took advantage of eight Trojan turnvers, including six lost fumbles, to win in just the second game Pahrump Valley played at home this season. For Pahrump Valley, it was the first game at home for interim coach Roy Goodell, who replaced Brian Hug three weeks ago. Hug, who is also the PVHS athletics director, is on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation into a public complaint. That investigation is complete and is under administrative review. In other games involving Nye County teams, Beatty lost 34-14 to Indian Springs in the Nevada Class A Central Division opener for the Hornets and Tonopah dominated Round Mountain 56-2 in another Central contest. Tonopah moved to 2-0 in the league, 6-1 in all games, with its next start Saturday at Dixie State College in St. George, Utah, against Beaver Dam. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. MT. Beatty, meanwhile, is at home against Round Mountain (7 p.m.). The Hornets are 3-3 in all games, while Round Mountain's Knights are 0-2 in the division, 0-6 in all games. Tonopah shares the division lead with Indian Springs, 2-0, 5-2 in all games. In other Class 3-A games, Sparks rolled past Spring Creek 19-0; Dayton shelled Winnemucca Lowry 41-0, and Truckee, Calif., hustled past Fernley 21-14. Truckee and Sparks are both 2-0 in the Northern League, with Spring Creek and Dayton at 1-1. This Friday, Truckee goes to Dayton, while Fernley entertains Spring Creek. In Class A, Pahranagat Valley Alamo's defending state champion Panthers outscored Las Vegas Mountain View Christian 42-22; Wells outlasted Owyhee 16-0 in a snow storm; Carlin racked Jackpot 73-0; Las Vegas Calvary Chapel lost 48-6 to Faith Baptist, Calif.; Spring Mountain ran away from Las Vegas Agassi Prep 46-20 and Smith Valley outscored Eureka 36-26.
