MESQUITE -- Pahrump Valley's girls could leave Nevada Class 3-A golf with three consecutive state championships. Will they?

It depends on how well the Lady Trojans respond to the pressure of regional and state tournaments, to be contested over the next week -- at The Palms here Thursday and at Palm Valley in Summerlin Monday and Tuesday.

Two major challengers stand in the way of the Lady Trojans.

Virgin Valley, which last week ended the PV girls' six-match unbeaten streak this fall by shooting 468 at another Mesquite course, Falcon Ridge. Coach Julie Floyd's Trojans had 482, with not one player scoring in the 80s.

While Amanda Bulloch had 83, player of the year Samantha Bulloch 88 and Felisha Baeza 93 for the Bulldogs, Ashley Keller had 90, Hailey Forry 92 and Jasper Biggs 96 for the Trojans. That's 14 strokes difference -- the margin of victory.

In the regionals, Pahrump Valley and Virgin Valley are expected to have full teams entered. That may not be the case for Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, which has had a five-girl team compete in a league match only three times this fall. Boulder City, usually a regular season and tournament challenger, and Overton Moapa Valley did not have a complete squad the entire fall.

Pahrump Valley, which will move into Class 4-A in the 2008-2009 school year, has claimed 3-A state golf titles in 1997, 2002, 2005 and 2006.

Girls golf will be the first of the 2007-2008 state 3-A fall sports championships to be decided over the next five weeks. Volleyball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country and football will follow.

Also entered at The Palms are West Wendover and Ely White Pine; both are 2-A schools, but there are not enough teams in that classification to have a separate tournament.

Incline, which in the 2006 state tournament, played in the wind and cold at Genoa Lakes last October, has Shelby Hooper and Katelyn Wright returning. Both are capable of shooting in the low 80s.

Incline plays in the West 3-A regionals at the Golf Club in Fernley Thursday, along with Dayton, Mineral County Hawthorne, North Tahoe, Reno Sage Ridge, Sparks and Zephyr Cove Whittell.

In the East regionals are Battle Mountain, Fernley, Winnemucca Lowry, Round Mountain, Spring Creek, Wells and Yerington.

Round Mountain is a Class A Nye County team. Wells, a title contender in 2005, is out of the 1-A ranks, while Yerington and Battle Mountain are 2-A.

The state tournament is Monday and Tuesday at Palm Valley Golf Club in the Summerlin area of Las Vegas. The top two teams and top five players off non-qualifying teams in each regional go to the state tournament.

At Falcon Ridge, the Bulldogs had Hannah Bulloch shoot 99, with Merlin John at 105 and Dru Zolman 119. For Pahrump Valley, Shyanne Dixon had 100, with Courtney Salmon and Meghan Morales at 102.

Mariah Genet had 118, Sierra Fitzgibbons 123 and Brittani Dinicola 135 for the Trojans.

Faith Lutheran had Ashley Lacher finish with 98, while Shawn Haggerty had 101, Rachel Aaron 117 and Remi Turok 125. Yaena Park also played for the Crusaders.

For Boulder City, Ashley Vince had 92, Margot Potter 98, Bethany Smith 111 and Bridget Ward 123.

Haley Causey had 104 and Amanda Jacobmyers 128 for Moapa Valley.

NOTES -- In the final regular-season standings, Pahrump Valley had 69 of a possible 70 points ... Virgin Valley had 64, with Faith Lutheran scoring 24 ... Boulder City and Moapa Valley did not record a team match point ... In the player of the year standings, Samantha Bulloch had 78.5 points, with Ashley Keller at 65, Courtney Salmon 60 and Margot Potter 53 ... Completing the top 10 were Jasper Biggs, 47; Amanda Bulloch, 46.83; Hailey Forry, 46.5; Ashley Vince, 44.5; Felisha Baeza, 39.83, and Meghan Morales, 24 ... Sierra Fitzgibbons was 13th with 17 points.
