A 73-year-old Pahrump woman was died after being attacked by eight wolf-hybrids at a residence in southern Pahrump Thursday evening.

Although the woman was rescued from the backyard by Nye County Animal Control officers and sheriff's office deputies, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after being transported to Desert View Regional Medical Center.

Following state mandate, all eight of the dogs were euthanized.

A female dog that was inside the residence at the time of the attack was not euthanized.

According to Tim McCarty, director of Animal Control, the woman was suffering from medical problems and living with her two sons, one of whom owned the dogs.

The dogs, McCarty said, were a family that were kept in the well-secured backyard, which had double fencing and concrete walls.

The woman was home alone when the attack occurred.

"We don't know why -- many never know -- why she went into the backyard," McCarty said. "She never fed them, the son did that. We surmise she had no personal relationship with the dogs."

The animal control director added that the female dog inside the residence was in heat, and that could have contributed to "a heightened aroused sense" in the other dogs and resulted in the the attack.

"The dogs responded very well to the owner, responding to verbal commands," McCarty said, adding that the dogs were signed over to animal control officers to be euthanized without incident.

"He had no qualms, he understood what needed to be done," McCarty said.

Due to the high amount of blood involved, the dogs were euthanized on site.

"We acted on the needs and requirements of the state," McCarty said.

Nye County Emergency Services HAZMAT assisted with the cleanup, which McCarty said took approximately five hours.
