Ault: Not happy with PackBy SCOTT SONNER
RENO (AP) -- Nevada coach Chris Ault said Monday a review of the game films of the Wolf Pack's last-minute win over UNLV 27-20 took a bit of the luster off what he described as one of the most satisfying victories over the rival Rebels in his career. "As we looked at the tape, offense and defense, we shook our heads because we did not play well as a team,'' Ault told about 175 boosters at his weekly luncheon. "At times we played well, but as a team, offensively, defensively, kicking game, no. A long way from it,'' he said. "That part is exciting because you say, `That's pretty good. You found a way to do it.' But you've got to find a way to be consistent and now you go into conference play. ... Each day, each time you play, you better have it strapped up and ready to play. "They are hard-nosed football teams and Fresno (State) is certainly one of the best teams in the conference,'' Ault said. Nevada (2-2) opens Western Athletic Conference play at home Saturday against the Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0 WAC), who beat Louisiana Tech 17-6 last week. Ault said the mixed reviews included the performance of sophomore quarterback Nick Graziano, who misfired several times in the first half but ended up completing 20-of-38 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns, including the 43-yard game-winner to Kyle Sammons with 27 seconds left. The defense played well much of the game, helping secure a 10-3 lead late in the third quarter, but a sophomore nose tackle whom Ault didn't name lined up on the wrong side of the center to allow UNLV running back Frank Summers' 6-yard score to tie it. And then there was kicker Brett Jaekle, who made a career-long 50-yard field goal but whose first two kickoffs of the game went out of bounds, allowing UNLV to start twice from its own 35. ``How can you kick a 50-yard field goal between a goal post that is 23 feet, 6 inches, and kick a kickoff _ and the field is 54 yards in width -- and you kick it out of bounds twice?'' Ault said. ``I mean... we're coaching 60 minutes. It's tough. Give us a break. You're a kicker!'' he said. ``He's got a great leg. That 50-yard field goal was big and it cleared by 5 or 6 yards. That's what's disappointing. You work your butt off and all the sudden you've got momentum and he snaps it out of bounds. You know, it's about all I can do to just control myself. I wanted to grab that neck so bad. I'm not tall enough, that's the problem,'' Ault said to laughs.
