3-A FOOTBALL Trojans, Bulldogs to clash
By DON McDERMOTT
Defending Nevada Class 3-A state champion Mesquite Virgin Valley brings its high-powered offense to Pahrump Valley High School Friday night, for a clash with the Trojans. Virgin Valley is 4-1, including a 41-20 victory against Las Vegas Faith Lutheran in the league opener for both teams last Friday. Coach Kirk Hafen's team is averaging 46 points per game, while allowing 20. Pahrump Valley is 0-4-1; its last start was Sept. 21, when the Trojans rallied from 13-, 15- and 14-point deficits to tie homestanding Yucca Valley, Calif., 34-34. That week, PVHS athletics director and football coach Brian Hug was placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation into a public complaint. That case is still to be resolved, so Roy Goodell, a former head coach at Ely White Pine, remains in charge of the football team. Friday is PVHS Hall of Fame night, with the charter class of 16 people to be inducted at halftime. The 16 are Ray and Irene Wulfenstein, Ron and Charlotte Floyd, Donald Worden, Larry Goins, Al Giannotti, Rod Poteete, Mike Floyd, Maggie Veloz (Villa), Charles Stevens, Dick Empey, Mike Kruse, Shari Longden Gals, Janelle Ward and Misti Ward Scott. In the other 3-A league game last week, Overton Moapa Valley downed Boulder City 40-14. On Friday, Faith Lutheran will be at home against Moapa Valley, while Boulder City plays a non-league game at Las Vegas Bonanza. In the Northern 3-A League, Sparks defeated previously unbeaten Fernley 25-12, Spring Creek ripped Dayton 42-0, and Truckee, Calif., downed Winnemucca Lowry 31-0. Friday, it will be Spring Creek at Sparks and Dayton at Lowry. Saturday, Fernley goes to Truckee. |
