Lady Trojans on road for golf finales
By DON McDERMOTT
It's getting close to crunch time for the Pahrump Valley High School girls golf team, both in the 2007 season and its highly successful stay in Nevada Class 3-A. Next year, Julie Floyd's team will be playing in the always tough Sunset Southwest Region, which includes perennial power Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. But, that is in 2008. The '07 regular season ends Thursday for the two-time defending Class 3-A state champion Lady Trojans and the rest of their league competitors, with a match at Mesquite. The Southern regionals are Oct. 11 at The Palms in Mesquite, with Pahrump Valley joined in that tournament by league members Boulder City, Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, Mesquite Virgin Valley, and Overton Moapa Valley, as well as 2-A schools West Wendover and Ely White Pine. There is no separate tournament for 2-A teams. The East and West regionals will be played on the same day in Fernley. In the East section are Battle Mountain, Fernley, Winnemucca Lowry, Round Mountain (a Nye County 1-A school), Spring Creek, Yerington and Wells (another 1-A team). The West playoffs include Dayton, Incline (2-A), Mineral County Hawthorne (2-A), North Tahoe, Reno Sage Ridge (1-A), Sparks, Truckee (Calif.) and Zephyr Cove Whittell (2-A). The top two teams from the three regionals, along with the top five scorers not associated with qualifying teams in each section will advance to the state tournament, to be played Oct. 16-17 at Palm Valley Golf Club in Summerlin. The Palm Valley course, at its full length, is 6,849 yards from the blue tees. It is 6,341 from the whites and 5.757 from the golds. The girls are likely to play from the red tees (5,502 yards). The Trojans, who have won four state titles in nine years, moved to 6-0 in all matches with a 485-to-509 victory against Virgin Valley at Boulder City Municipal last Thursday. Faith Lutheran, Boulder City, and Moapa Valley did not record team scores. For PVHS, Ashley Keller had 89, Courtney Salmon 95, Jasper Biggs 97 and Meghan Morales 95. Tied with 109s were Hailey Forry and Sierra Fitzgibbons. Shyanne Dixon had 114. For Virgin Valley, Samantha Bulloch locked up player of the year honors, finishing as medalist with 84. Felisha Baeza and Amanda Bulloch each had 100; Hannah Bulloch had 109; Merlin John shot 116 and Dru Zolman had 131. For Faith Lutheran, Ashley Lacher had 98, Shawn Haggerty 100, Rachel Aaron 123 and Remi Turok 133. Margot Potter fired a 92 for Boulder City, which had Ashley Vince add 99, Bethany Smith 113 and Bridget Ward 120. Haley Causey had 106 and Amanda Jacobmeyers 135 for Moapa Valley. The win gave PVHS 60 points, while Virgin Valley has 54 and Faith Lutheran 24. The Crusaders have had a full team only three times this fall, while Boulder City and Moapa Valley did not score. Samantha Bulloch has 67.5 player of the year points, going into the league finale. The only way she cannot clinch the title is if she doesn't show up Thursday and Courtney Salmon finishes third or better in the medalist standings. Salmon has 58 points, while Ashley Keller has 55, Margot Potter 48.5 and Jasper Biggs 41 to complete the top five. In the top 10 are Hailey Forry, 38; Amanda Bulloch, 34.83; Ashley Vince, 36; Felisha Baeza, 32.83 and Meghan Morales, 22. Sierra Fitzgibbons was 12th with 15 points. |
