PREP BASKETBALL Hot-shooting Eagles stop Trojans' boys
By DON McDERMOTT
Someone asked if Lake Mead Christian Academy was that good, or if Pahrump Valley was that bad. The answers -- in the wake of Lake Mead's 98-64 blitz of the homestanding Trojans Tuesday -- were "Yes" and "No." Coach Jeff Newton's visiting Eagles were "that good" because they fired in 42 of 63 shots (66.7 percent is torrid, ya'all, considering it was their season opener. In the first quarter, they missed a layup and a 3-point attempt, but zeroed in 16 field goals to jump well ahead (36-8) in the game played before a standing-room only crowd in the Ninth Grade Academy gym. Standing room only happened because there aren't that many seats for people to find in that gym. Trojan fans are going to have to put up with that inconvenience until work on repairing the main school gym floor is completed, hopefully before the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League season begins in January. The Trojans were not "bad." Rather, they displayed plenty of fight in the final three quarters, when Lake Mead's shooting developed relative normalcy. Coach Lonnie Shereck's team was outscored 62-56 in the final 24 minutes. Daveon Fisher, a senior playing in his first-ever varsity game, scored 13 points and injected athleticism into the PVHS attack. Point guard Darius Dolly had 16 points, with Shaun Johnson adding 10 and Tyler True 11 for the Trojans, who were 23-for-50 (46 percent) from the field. Landon Littlefield, a junior guard who ranks among the best Class A players in Nevada, led the Eagles with 25 points. Jarid Dean added 19, Phillip Nix 10 and Dequan Thompson 16 for the Eagles, who lost 61-59 to Las Vegas Trinity Christian in the 2007 state 1-A championship game. The Trojans are playing in a tournament today and Saturday at Lake Mead Christian Academy. Results will be published in the Times' Wednesday edition.
