ARTISTS AT WORK Sabori, students paint history of Pahrump
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
The Nye County School District office, at West Street and Wilson Road, will look a little brighter, thanks to the efforts of Andre Sabori and some Pahrump Valley students. Sabori and the students are painting a 100-foot long, 9-foot-high mural on the building's wall facing Wilson Road. The mural will be a pictorial history of Pahrump and include images and people from the town's very beginnings. Bob Ruud, Lois Kellogg, and of course the Hafens will be depicted. The first school, a covered wagon, the old Cottin Pickin' Saloon, and Ray Wulfenstein's race car will also brighten the wall. Sabori, who has been a muralist for more than 40 years, approached the school board with the idea in an effort to foster the arts in Pahrump. He went to Crystal Dabrowski's art class at Pahrump Valley High School and recruited some students to help with the project. Several students at a time work on the mural with Sabori, rotating through different shifts and using house paint donated by Pahrump Rental & Hardware. "I enjoy working with the kids," Sabori said. "They're learning how to paint a mural." The main blocks of color and groundwork are being completed. Sabori said once that is done, he'll teach the students how to put the finishing touches and detail on the main points that will make the mural complete. "They'll have to do a lot a running across the street to gain perspective," Sabori said. "But you don't want a mural too detailed because they're meant to be seen from a distance." The students couldn't ask for a better teacher. Sabori painted historical murals for the host cities of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and is currently doing art work for the Las Vegas Walk of Stars (he has long history of painting rock stars and rock posters) and the Polyester Nightclub in the Stratosphere Casino. Since the project is for the community, Sabori is inviting any interested students or artists to help with the project, which weather permitting he expects to be finished within 2 months.
