Deputies avoid injury in BLM land shooting
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Nye County Sheriff's deputies Robert Kingsley and John Kakavulias were shot at Nov. 18, after they were dispatched to BLM land south of Fox Street and East Martin Avenue. The deputies were not struck by any bullets, nor were they injured. However, three men were arrested for firing the weapons; they were reportedly intoxicated. David Richard Torres, 42, Jaime Errol Propps, 42, and Joshua E. Propps, 25, were arrested and booked on charges of discharging a firearm where humans are endangered, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, and injury to private property over $250. It all began when the deputies were dispatched to the area at 4:18 p.m. after Patrick Walker, 51, reported shots being fired and striking his house. When they arrived at the residence, Walker told the officers that the shots were coming from the south. While walking in that direction, the deputies heard gunshots. Kingsley stated in a written press release that "I heard a louder gunshot followed by a high pitched whizzing sound passing close to my person. Based on my training and experience I knew a rifle bullet had just passed by me and we took cover." While taking cover, the deputy reported hearing three more gunshots and bullets passing over him towards the residences behind him to the north. After the firing stopped, the deputies continued walking towards where the shots were coming from and found the suspects standing near a white truck. A 12-guage shotgun and a semi-automatic 7.62 x 39 millimeter were found in plain view in the bed of the truck. According to the sheriff's office press release, all of the suspects admitted to firing the rifle and drinking beer while they were doing it. A test determined that the individuals were all above the legal limit of alcohol for possessing a firearm. Walker reported a bullet hole in the roof of his house. The three suspects were taken to the detention center, where they are being held on $6,632 bail. |
