PV athletes honored at assemblies

Pahrump Valley honored its boys' soccer team at an awards program Monday.

Recognized on coach Gene Smith's team were Tyler Raymer, MVP; Daimon Nelson, offensive MVP; James Gang, defensive MVP; Sergio Castro (coach's award) and Martin Apolinar (most improved). The Trojans lost in the finals of the Southern Nevada Class 3-A regional tournament.

Other teams recognized in programs earlier this month:

Girls Golf (Nevada Class 3-A state champions for the third consecutive years, under the direction of coach Julie Floyd) -- Ashley Keller, MVP; Jasper Biggs (captain's award) and Meghan Morales (most improved).

Cross Country -- Andy Anderson's team had nine runners recognized, including MVPs McKenzie Dean (state champion in 2006 and 2007), Stephanie Andros and David Jacobi; most improved Pam Hunter and Jimmy Suber; Lionheart Award Ashlee Wolf and David Binderim, and Tough as Nails Nicole Dillon and Gabe Veloz.

Volleyball -- The Trojans lost in the state 3-A semifinals to eventual champion Yerington, with Amy Braach-Hart in her first year as coach. Awards went to Kristi Daffer (MVP), Arlette Scott (offensive player of year), Brittney Lindgren (defensive player of year), Taylor Lau (coach's award) and Casey Scheller (most improved).

Football -- Anderson Floyd (MVP), Benji DeSantiago (offense), Daniel Miller (defense), Zach Weldon (coach's), Chase Shropshire (most improved) and Travis Abreu-Buendia (most imspirational) received awards. The Trojans were 0-8-1 in the 2007 campaign.
