LAS VEGAS -- The Duel in the Desert produced big payoffs for Eddie Martin and Jimmy Mars Saturday, on the half-mile dirt oval at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Martin, of Stillwater, Okla., won the IMCA modifieds title, while Mars, of Menomonie, Wis., won the late model championship. The payoff was $5,000 to win the 40-lap feature races.

Martin ended the two-year reign of Jeremy Payne of Cave City, Ark., who was 27th (out of 28 starters). Martin, who started outside of pole winner Kellen Chadwick of Oakley, Calif., led the final 29 laps.

Dan Fitzgerald, who competed regularly at the Pahrump Valley Speedway in past seasons, won his modified heat race Thursday night and was running second in a qualifying heat Saturday before getting involved in a crash.

Fitzgerald, on Saturday, was third in the Wild West Showdown for the top 20 modifieds from Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. Jeep Berry of Myton, Utah, won, then was sixth in the modified feature.
