Fireworks display date discussed

The Pahrump Town Board took care of a variety of business at its Tuesday, Nov. 20, meeting, much of it having to do with future town events.

The approval of a request for proposal by Zambelli Fireworks Internationale Co. led to the usual discussion and debate over when the Freedom Festival's fireworks display should take place.

In previous years the show, put on by Zambelli, has been moved to dates other than the actual Fourth of July for a variety of reasons, ranging from the holiday being in the middle of week (when people may be less inclined to go because they have to get to work the next day) to the company's full crew already being booked for shows in Las Vegas.

In exchange for not having the show on Independence Day, the pyrotechnicians have contributed 10 percent more fireworks on their own hook.

Next year, however, the holiday lands on a Friday.

But according to a letter submitted by Irving Perry, western region manager for Zambelli, this is just more reason to have the show on a different date because "for many people this will be a travel day, you may wish to consider the weekend prior ... as possible alternate display dates."

The board agreed to accept Zambelli's proposal but asked that additional requests for bids from other companies be placed on a future agenda.

A multi-year contract with the Bar T Rodeo Co. Inc. for future Fall Festivals was approved by the board.

The three-year contract ensures the company will provide livestock, a PRCA secretary, timers, bullfighters, and various other rodeo accoutrements for future rodeos, a staple of the annual festival.

Air Force planes will be flying overhead now that the board approved a memorandum of understanding with 98 Range Wing of Nellis Air Force Base to conduct training exercises within the town.

The urban close air support training exercises will be conducted to help Air Force personnel in locating and tracking potential targets in urban areas.

The first training exercise will take place between Nov. 27 and 29 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Two service agreements with WillDan Engineering to prepare specifications and bid packages for lighting projects at Petrack and Simkins parks were also approved by the board.

Vice Chairman John McDonald, as usual, voted against the service agreements, arguing that the town should go out to bid for the project.

Previous efforts by the town to receive bids for similar projects have resulted in a lack of response from engineering firms, leading the town to approve a service agreement with WillDan.
