The DOE proposes most of the nuclear fuel from 72 reactors around the country and four DOE facilities would be packaged at the reactor sites in canisters that would be placed directly into waste packages for emplacement into the 41 miles of emplacement drifts 1,000 feet below the surface of Yucca Mountain. The EIS states the overwhelming majority of waste would arrive on a rail line to be constructed, in 9,500 casks, requiring 2,100 trains, but some shipments will arrive by overweight truck, another 2,700 casks.

The DOE estimates 1,300 jobs would be created directly and indirectly in the peak year 2021. The operations of Yucca Mountain are now projected to start in 2017 and last up to the year 2067 instead of 2035.
