Gray storms out, resigns from board
By RICHARD STEPHENS
Beatty Town Advisory Board Chairman Larry Gray stormed out of Wednesday's meeting, saying, "I resign" and that he didn't need to "take this grief." Gray's action took place after board members Joannie Jarvis and Teresa Sullivan asked why they had not been asked to take part in a recent interview with a prospective physician at the Beatty Clinic. Gray told the two, who had previously volunteered to handle matters relating to the clinic and had been doing so, that they were "too negative." After Gray's departure, Bert Bertram, who had participated in the interview at Gray's request, said he had asked Gray why Jarvis and Sullivan were not doing it. He apologized for not inquiring further when Gray told him, "It isn't going to happen." He said had he known the circumstances, he would not have taken part in the interview. Jarvis and Sullivan said they had a good relationship with Dr. Heard, who is in charge of Nevada Health Centers. They said their goal was to get a good doctor, have 24-hour service and to have good care. Later in the meeting, Bertram pressed for the board to go ahead with the purchase of a clock for the proposed town square. Jarvis and Sullivan wanted to know more about available funding and said they would prefer to see a plan for the square first. Kitty Shubert supported Bertram in proceeding with the purchase. Both argued that money had been previously approved for the clock in the beautification budget, that it had already been two years, and that it would take some time for the purchase process to make its way through the system. Shubert and Bertram also stated that Commissioner Joni Eastley had told them that more beautification money was available if needed. After discussion, the board voted to authorize up to $21,000 to purchase the clock, which is designed to match the street lamps that have already been purchased and are awaiting installation. They will have to seek competitive quotes on the clock. The board approved the Chamber of Commerce's request for storefront beautification funds, not to exceed $5,000. The Chamber plans to contract for signs, update or repair outdoor lighting, and purchase park benches for their building next to the river bridge. With some discussion the board voted to support Nevada for Health Care's resolution calling on all elected officials and candidates for office to "work together with consumers, businesses, and health care providers" to provide quality, affordable health care for everyone. The resolution does not support any particular candidate or plan or method of funding. The board will have to reschedule a master plan meeting originally scheduled for this Saturday, as it was not posted. Secretary Janet Rogers said the Chamber of Commerce would be billed for $348.50 for materials used to repair damage to the floor in the large room of the Community Center during Beatty Days. A parcel map request by John Lawrence Moog and a request by Robert Johnson for access to some county planning office information on Beatty were both tabled for lack of representation or information. |
