The Nye County Sheriff's Office is launching a seat belt enforcement blitz during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Although seat belts are always required, the enforcement campaign will run through Nov. 30.

Thanksgiving weekend is one of the most dangerous and deadliest times of the year on American roadways, simply because the public opts not to use their seat belts.

"Wearing a seat belt costs you nothing and may save your life or protect you from a serious injury that could effect you for the rest of your life," said Paula Cooper, Nye County Sheriff's Office spokesperson.

"If you are stopped for any reason or any moving violation and are not wearing your seat belt, especially during this Thanksgiving enforcement period, it will definitely cost you a ticket if it doesn't cost your life," she said.

Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. Research has shown that when lap and shoulder restraints are used properly, the risk of a fatal injury to front seat passengers in reduced by 45 percent and the risk of moderate to critical injury is reduced by 50 percent.

Sheriff Tony DeMeo said, "Thanksgiving is a great time to count our blessings and a good time to remind all family members around the Thanksgiving table to always buckle-up -- every trip, every time."
