Coat drive needs are small The most requested gift from Santa is a warm coat. Response has been wonderful but really needed are coats for small children and babies. Drop off your new and gently used coats until Dec. 15 at Mankins Allstate Insurance, 1271 S. Hwy. 160 (across from Saddle West) or Dream Homes, 3100 S. Hwy. 160, during business hours. The coats will be donated to No to Abuse for distribution to the children of Pahrump. Thank you Pahrump community for your support. Veterans Barbecue Homeland Heroes and the Stagestop Casino will hold the 2nd annual Veterans Barbecue benefit 4-9 p.m., Nov. 17 at the Stagestop Casino, Stagecoach Road. There will be an outdoor barbecue, drinks for $1 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., live music by the Diamondback Band, 50/50 drawing for cash and raffles. All proceeds and donations will benefit local disabled veterans. There will be a drop box for donations to Toys for Tots as well. Obama headquarters The Barack Obama will have a grand opening for the new campaign headquarters at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, 3250 S. Hwy. 160, Suite 9B. The event is free and open to the public. Local supporters and volunteers will celebrate the opening of the 7th campaign office in Nevada. Live entertainment by the Pizzi Band will be provided. Christmas Pageant The Pahrump Arts Council Theater Guild will present "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," at 7 p.m., Nov. 16 and 17 in the Pahrump Valley High School auditorium. The story is based on the notorious Herdman family, by Barbara Robinson and features local actors ranging from 2 to 72. Paul Dilella of the Pahrump Valley High School Drama Department will direct. Tickets are $7 for PAC members and students and $10 for adults. Tickets are on sale at Ace Hardware, Pahrump Community Library, the Chamber of Commerce, the PAC office and at the door. Call 751-6776 for more information. Festival of Trees Nathan Adelson Hospice and The Golden Monarch Council is gearing up for the 3rd Annual Festival of Trees. The event will start at 11 a.m., Nov. 18 with the tree and wreath decorating party at the Pahrump Nugget along with an official tree lighting. The Festival of Trees Gala is scheduled for 6 p.m., Dec. 1 at the Nugget Event Center. Gala festivities include entertainment, a no host bar, dinner and dancing, silent auctions, surprise raffle and door prizes. Pet adoptions The Nye County Animal Shelter will host another adoption 10-2 p.m., Dec. 8 at Hollywood Video. Adoption fees are $64 for dogs and $36 for cats. Call 751-7020 for more information. Library calendar The Pahrump Community Library is located at 701 East Street, and is hosting the following events in November: Nov. 1-20--Thanksgiving food drive. Bring non-perishable food items to the library. Nov. 17--Pahrump Anime Club meeting, 12-4 p.m. Nov. 19--Trustees meeting, 10 a.m. Nov. 20--Favorite Author Book Club meeting, 1:30 p.m. Computer classes for beginning level users are Monday-Wednesday. Sign-up at the library only. The winter reading program continues Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Dec. 18. Tuesday classes are Little pups (ages 2-3), 9:15-9:45 a.m.; Red pups (ages 4-5), 10-10:45 a.m.; Big red (ages 5-12 and Kindergarten), 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday is craft class (5th grade and up), 3:15-4:15 p.m. Movie Day is canceled this month due to the holiday weekend. Thanksgiving dinner The American Legion, Post 22 and auxiliary is hosting a Thanksgiving dinner from 5-7 p.m., Nov. 16 at the VFW hall on Homestead Road. Dinner will be free to veterans and $6 for non-veterans. Walk-in Flu Shot Clinics The Bureau of Community Health will have flu-shot clinics on the following dates for November. Nov. 19 -- 8:30-4 p.m. Nov. 20 -- 10-4 p.m. Nov. 21 -- 8:30-11 a.m. Flu shots are offered to adults only. Children will be seen by scheduled appointment. Medicare or Medicaid cards are accepted. Thanksgiving baskets The Salvation Army is now accepting applications for the Thanksgiving food baskets and Christmas toys. Christmas application deadline is Dec. 15. Library book signing There will be a book signing by local author Vivian Lee for her book, "The Picking Field" 10-1 p.m., Nov. 17 at the Pahrump Community Library. The book is the story of LeAnna and her brothers' journey through an early childhood of sex, violence and starvation. OHV workshop Off-highway vehicle enthusiasts, land managers and other stakeholders are invited to a two-day workshop on off-highway vehicle use in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area 9-5 p.m., Nov. 30 and 9-4:30 p.m., Dec. 1 at the Mountain Falls Golf Club, 5001 Fox Ave. The workshop will assist the U.S. Forest Service and community members to work together as partners to steward the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area off-highway vehicle trails system. Horseback riders, hikers and mountain bikers are also welcome to attend. Continental breakfast, lunch and breaks will be provided. Nov. 27 -- infant and child CPR, 1 p.m., registration required. The Back to Basics Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old). Christmas Craft Fair There will be a Christmas craft fair 9-3 p.m., Nov. 17 at Desert Greens, 350 W. Wilson Road (between Blagg and Linda). Free "Ty" beanie ducks for the kids while supplies last and raffles every half hour. Everything is handcrafted. Pie social Saved by Grace Lutheran Church will host a pre-Thanksgiving service of thanks followed by a pie social at 7 p.m., Nov. 20, 1521 E. Idaho Street, in the Mt. Ron Paul at Ruud Center Ron Paul will be the first Republican presidential candidate to visit Pahrump in the 2008 campaign, with an appearance from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19 at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Holiday trash collections Pahrump Valley Disposal will be picking up refuse one day late after all holidays this season. If your trash day is Thursday (Thanksgiving), the trash pickup will be Friday and all refuse collection will be one day behind for the holiday week. For Christmas and New Years, collection will be one day late as well. If your trash day is Tuesday (Christmas or New Years), then refuse will be picked up Wednesday, and all collections will run one day late from that point. Toys for Tots The Marine Corps League, Pahrump Detachment 1199 partners with the Marine Corps Reserve to support Toys for Tots. Toys for Tots will collect new, unwrapped toys from donation boxes at our local businesses to distribute to children in Nye County. Collection boxes will be located in nearly 40 locations including Ace Hardware, Wal-Mart, Albertson's, Smith's, CVS Pharmacy, Desert Valley Regional Medical Center and Walgreens.
