Yarrell: Horses inspire art show at Tecopa

The Tecopa Basin Artist Group is proud to present "Equus Caballus," a collection of work by Donna Yarrell.

The show will run all of November at the Tecopa Hot Springs Resort and features a collection of Yarrell's latest work inspired by horses.

Exhibits include photographs, collages and paintings in both black and white and color. The show is a must see for anyone who loves horses or fine art, a lovely exhibition which portrays the horse in earthy and natural tones.

Yarrell is a local artist who works in Pahrump at Great Basin College and lives in Tecopa. While on a trip to Elko recently, she was inspired by the creatures and chose to explore the expression of horses through her art.

Her themes coincide with acquiring her own palomino quarter horse this spring. She is having the opportunity to train it, a longtime dream of hers, and says that one day she entered a tack shop and was struck by the sheer presence of the horse.

She knew that she had to work with the horse in her next projects. She fell in love with his eyes and was fascinated. "Usually the horse is romanticized in art. I am not romanticizing it at all," she said. The experience of having and training a horse has served to teach Yarrell about human emotion.

The works displayed during this show are most likely only the first of many. She would like to continue working with different media to explore the horse further.

Yarrell has been an accomplished artist and showing for more than 20 years. Originally from Texas, she lived in Southern California for 15 years and spent a lot of time traveling to Mexico seasonally to develop her art.

She has worked with many different materials, including metal. About six and a half years ago she came to Tecopa to help a friend start the Tecopa Hot Springs Resort. She now helps with the gallery at the resort and the Tecopa Basin Artist Group when she is not teaching at the college.

Yarrell is happy and excited because "it looks like things are starting to happen" with the arts in both Tecopa and in Pahrump. She means specifically Great Basin College, the Pahrump Valley Arts Council and the Tecopa Basin Artist Group.

The Tecopa Basin Artist Group is dedicated to promoting, supporting and inspiring member artists as well as giving visitors the opportunity to experience art in the incredible landscape of Tecopa. It is open to all local artists of any media type.

It has eight members. Their workshops are led by visiting as well as local artists, which usually cover topics such as life drawing, photography, approaches to landscape and making collages.

They also offer classes on clay work and pit firing. They host both individual and group shows for their members and have a busy schedule coming up in the next year.

The next show at the Hot Springs Resort will be called "Works On and Off the Wall." It will be a group show of all the artists and feature an artist from Blue Diamond, Phillip Tororian.

The Gallery is behind the bright blue building, two parking lots up from the public hot spring (on the same side). Look for the red roof. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday or by appointment. Call 760-852-4420 for more information or for an upcoming events schedule, or visit their Web site at www.tecopahotsprings.org.

There are many unique and beautiful objects for sale, prints, figurines, natural facial clays, and books for sale at the gallery. Be sure and stay to enjoy the other local attractions. At the same location there is a labyrinth built from rocks collected from a wide area of Nevada and California, enjoy the hot springs ($8/person), and for a unique experience, upscale dining is available at Pastel's Bistro.
