Alamo wins Class A titleSPECIAL TO THE PVT
LAS VEGAS -- The same volleyball players who became flustered during the 2006 Nevada Class A state championship loss against the Owyhee Braves looked quite composed this time around. Pahranagat Valley Alamo defeated Owyhee 25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17 for its 10th state championship in 11 years and earned some redemption after their streak of nine straight titles was snapped by the Braves in 2006. "Last year those same girls folded in the state tournament," said Panther head coach Ginger Whipple. "This time they weren't going to have any part of that." Senior Jadey Jones certainly wasn't having any part of that, as she recorded 26 kills, nine digs, and two blocks. Senior Lauren Leavitt added 11 kills for the Panthers. "I'm glad we had some senior leadership," Whipple said. "They really made a huge difference." Still, the defending champs didn't go away quietly. The Braves were led by the hard-hitting duo of seniors Holly Thomas and Shayleah Hunter. "We knew Owyhee would be ready for us and we really had to fight for it," Whipple said. "Both teams put it all on the floor today." The Panthers took the first game, 25-17, but the Braves answered right back in the second, 25-22. Alamo controlled the third game, winning 25-18, but the Braves jumped ahead in the fourth and it appeared the match was heading to a fifth and deciding game. But with junior libero Molly Hansen serving, the Panthers ran off eight consecutive points, turning a 13-17 deficit into a 21-17 lead. "Molly, I've got to give her credit," Whipple said. "She stood up there and got us back into the ball game." The Warriors wouldn't lead again and Jones fittingly sealed it with an exclamatory kill. "It's indescribable," Whipple said. "At the first of the year we set a goal. We hoped we'd be able to play Owyhee again. I asked them, how many opportunities do you get at a second chance?" Junior setter Mary Higbee made few errors as she set up Jones and others. She finished with 28 assists. Sophomore setter Addie Canning contributed nine assists. "We knew we had to stay strong on offense to be able to win," Whipple said. "We worked hard and it paid off." She added, "I'm just thrilled for the girls." |
