A geology student was successfully rescued by the Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue Service Saturday afternoon after sustaining injuries to their lower extremities.

The hiker, reportedly a geology student with a class at California State University at Long Beach, was approximately 1,500 feet above valley floor on a mountain located on the far west end of Mesquite Avenue.

According to Fire Chief Scott Lewis, the budding geologist was injured when a boulder came loose and hit him, causing what rescue workers suspected to be a possible fracture to his leg.

Rescue workers used a series of ropes and a Stokes basket to get the student down.

The hiker was transported to Desert View Regional Medical Center.
