Vivian Lee Owen will meet and sign copies of her first published work from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

The local author and reference librarian at the Pahrump Community Library presented her volume, "The Picking Fields," Saturday, Nov. 3, at the regular meeting of the Friends of the Library.

In addition to the Friends, the audience included members of the Tumbleweed Tales Society, a local poetry group.

Described by the author as "life turned into fiction," the book tells of the journey of LeAnna and her two younger brothers through an early childhood full of violence and starvation.

In the end, their triumph over neglect and terror is a tribute to LeAnna's pluck, determination and love.

Owen wrote the book in the hope that her readers will walk away with the overwhelming conviction that one can rise above the most adverse conditions to a full and successful life.

Readers may also wish to be prepared for the sequel to follow.
