Take a Vet to School program will begin
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Students at Pahrump Valley High School will get to see living history Wednesday, Nov. 14, during Take a Vet to School Day. The program will feature short presentations in various classes by veterans with combat experience followed by a question and answer session. "They'll get to see firsthand what war does to individuals," Kenneth Shockley, Nye County's director of Veterans Services said. "Instead of reading about it from a textbook, they'll get to and hear about it from a different perspective." So far 10 veterans have volunteered their time to the program, most of them from World War II. But Shockley is still looking for more and hopes to have vets from various conflicts, including Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War, to speak to students. The program originally started in Las Vegas; this is the first year it will take place in Pahrump. Interested veterans are asked to send in an application that includes a short biography of themselves and their experiences so students can study the conflict ahead of time and have prepared questions. Audiovisual aides, such as VCRs or projectors, are available for use by the school. Each veteran is asked to prepare a 15- to 20-minute presentation which will be followed by student questions. Shockley worked with Rhonda Cosner, the Social Studies Department chair, to bring the program to Pahrump. Although this year it's only a one-day program, Shockley said he would like to see it expand in future years. Given Pahrump's heavy veteran population, that shouldn't be too difficult. "This would be a perfect thing for Pahrump," Shockley said. If you are a veteran interested in sharing your experience with students, contact Shockley for an application by calling 775-537-2790, ext. 215. |
