Pahrump Valley was oh, so close, to sending three teams to Nevada state tournaments last weekend. What a sendoff that would have been for the Trojans, in their final fall sports seasons in Class 3-A.

The volleyball team won the regional title Friday; it had to, to earn a trip to the state semifinals, to be played Friday at Silverado High School in Las Vegas.

Thursday, the PVHS boys shelled Ely White Pine 5-0 and the girls ended Boulder City's post-season domination against them with a 3-1 victory in the regional semifinals played at the Betty Wilson Soccer Complex on the Cimarron-Memorial High School campus in Las Vegas.

With those victories, Pahrump Valley's teams advanced to the finals Saturday, with Las Vegas Faith Lutheran the opposition in both games.

Because the South could send only one team to the state semifinals -- to be played Friday in Reno -- the Trojans had to win, or their seasons were done.

Alas, the Gene Smith-coached boys fell 3-2 to the Crusaders, who moved to 16-0 against their Southern 3-A rivals, including 3-0 against Pahrump Valley (12-4). The Crusaders outscored the Trojans 4-0, 2-1 and 3-2 enroute to a perfect record against 3-A opponents.

The PV girls, directed by first-year coach Greg Leseberg, were stopped 2-1 in overtime by Faith Lutheran. The Lady Crusaders scored only five goals against PVHS in three games, but wound up with a 2-0-1 record against the Trojans.

Pahrump Valley will move into the Class 4-A Sunset Region Southwest Division in the 2008-2009 school year.

Tentatively slated to return to the boys' team are rising seniors Francisco Herrera (the goalkeeper in both regional games), Erik Lua-Rodriguez, Sergio Castro, James Gang, Brian Lee, Daimon Nelson, Michael Nelson, Eddie Jim, Travis Cason, Michael Remond, Cole Blake, Justin Romero and Robert Schmidt.

Graduating in 2008 will be John McHugh, Steve Manley, Tyler Raymer, Omar Roman and Iggy Wagner.

Underclassmen returning: Shane Lindemann, Martin Apolinar, Jarrett Holley, Alex Fonseca and Will Peers.

The Lady Trojans will lose Emily Poertner, Brittany Orr, Kolbey Umbertus and Devyn Moen.

Rising seniors include Lauren Luna, Stephanie Ledford, Christina Maples, Samantha Sposato, Corissa Butland, Crystal Lopez and Alexis Abou-Halaka.

Underclassmen include Brianna Milk, Dana Ayala, Shelby Hughes, Leanna Morrow, Angelica Musumeci, Katelyn Foss, Brittany Thomason and Haley Williams.

Brittany Orr of Pahrump Valley was named the most valuable player in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League, by vote of the coaches.

Named to the first team were midfielder Emily Poertner and defender Sammy Sposato.

Taylor Raymer was a second-team choice and Devyn Moen received honorable mention.

Because of a critical error by an officials' crew, the Northern 3-A League girls championship and third-place games had to be postponed until Tuesday at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno.

Three referees were suspended after they committed an error that resulted in the reversal of the winner during the Spring Creek-Incline game played Thursday. Spring Creek was declared the winner.

However, Donnie Nelson, assistant director of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, said the officials misinterpreted the rules concerning shootouts.

Nelson said the match should have been moved to a sudden-death shootout format (under NIAA rules), after both teams failed to score in regulation and a first overtime shootout

The game was replayed Friday and Incline won 3-1. That replay resulted in the tournament being delayed until Tuesday.

Because of those games played Tuesday, the times for the state semifinals -- to be contested Friday in MacKay Stadium on the University of Nevada campus in Reno -- have yet to be determined.

The boys' pairings -- Truckee, Calif., vs. Incline and Las Vegas Faith Lutheran vs. North Tahoe -- are firm, but need starting times.

The title games will be played at 10 a.m. (girls) and Noon (boys) at Damonte Ranch High School in south Reno.
