On trees, travel and football ...

It's playoff time, which means we:

traveled to Las Vegas Thursday for Class 3-A regional soccer games involving Pahrump Valley's boys and girls,

will be at Boulder City today for Pahrump Valley action in the volleyball tournament and

will hit the road Saturday to Tonopah, for a Nevada Class A quarterfinal football game.

If you are in a hurry for the results because you want to attend the next round or are simply curious, the Web sites, www.niaa.com or www.nevprep.com, or www.lvrj.com, will have them.

The Pahrump Valley Times will have reports on all of the playoff action-- including McKenzie Dean's trip to Reno for the state 3-A cross country championships Saturday.

Nye County volleyball teams -- Beatty, Tonopah and Round Mountain -- are in the Class A regionals at Las Vegas Mountain View Christian today and Saturday.

In the meanwhile, consider:

The Nye County School District has posted openings for football coaching positions at Pahrump Valley High School.

Without question, these hirings, especially for the head coach, will be the most important in the history of football at PVHS. The Trojans, with Brian Hug in charge for the first four games, and Roy Goodell at the helm for the final five, finished 0-8-1 and were outscored 407-74.

The Trojans, 3-15-1 the last two seasons and now winless in their last 10 starts dating back to a 20-10 loss to Overton Moapa Valley in 2006, need a significant change and not just because of the record.

The Trojans move into the Class 4-A Sunset Region Southwest Division in the 2008-2009 school year. Which means work to improve the quality of the program has to start by mid-term at the latest, not in June.

It's hard to believe that just two years ago, the Trojans won the Southern League championship and ended a long losing streak against Virgin Valley in the process.

Now, for some business news ...

The PVHS athletics department is going to conduct a Christmas tree sale starting Nov. 24. The tree lot will be at the high school, with proceeds benefitting the athletics department.

The trees will cost $30 pre-order for Douglas firs up to 6-feet tall; $40 for Noble firs up to 6-feet tall; $40 for Douglas firs taller than 6-feet and $50 for Noble firs taller than 6-feet.

At the lot, the respective prices will be $35, $45, $45 and $55. Pre-order forms are available in the high school athletics office. Pre-order trees will be available for pickup on Nov. 24.
