Eagles, Crusaders in tough gamesPVT
In the Southern Nevada Class 3-A football regular season, Boulder City and Las Vegas Faith Lutheran had their problems in league games. Boulder City (1-3, 3-6) lost 29-12 to Mesquite Virgin Valley (4-0, 8-1), while Faith Lutheran (2-2, 5-4) fell 42-0 to Overton Moapa Valley (3-1, 6-3) in regular-season games. Saturday at 1 p.m., those matchups will be repeated in the first round of the Southern regionals, with Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley -- Nevada's defending state 3-A champion -- playing at home. Boulder City qualified for the regionals by defeating Pahrump Valley (0-4, 0-8-1) 51-7 in the final game of the regular season. The Eagles figure to have just as many problems trying to handle Virgin Valley's 'Sneaky-T' offense, led by quarterback Doug Hafen, as they did the first time. And Virgin Valley has an opportunistic defense that allowed only 46 points in league games. Faith Lutheran, however, could be an infinitely more dangerous opponent for Moapa Valley. In the league game in early October, Max Done, the Crusaders' pass-slinging quarterback, did not play because of an injury. Done, who threw five touchdown passes against Pahrump Valley in a 40-7 victory, is not easily pressured, since he is equally adept in running the football. The Crusaders' quarterback has several receivers, including 6-foot-6 Diontea Wright. Of course, quarterback Max Jenkins and tailback Brad Weiss are Moapa Valley's dynamic duo offensively. Stopping them will not be easy for the Crusaders. In Northern first-round games Saturday, it will be No. 1 Truckee, Calif., at home against Fernley, with No. 2 Sparks hosting Spring Creek. Both games start at 1 p.m. The brackets will be re-drawn for the semifinals, to be played No. 10. The championship game is at Mackay Stadium in Reno Nov. 17. |
