FISHING
EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR The number of anglers using this reservoir has dropped, but trout fishing is still fair to good. Rainbows and tiger trout both have been taking rainbow PowerBait or worms. Brown trout have been spawning near the upper end. The Nevada Department of Wildlife planted nearly 57,000 trout in this water during 2007 so there should still be plenty of fish to catch. ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR Despite extremely low water conditions, a few anglers are still fishing Echo. Rainbow trout will be holding in the deeper water near structures. LAKE MEAD The shad have come in, and anglers are using the small silver fish to entice bites from striped bass. Anglers have been catching stripers in the Vegas Wash area, near the tires at Lake Mead Marina, and near the fishing pier at Hemenway. The fish also have been taking baits near the Hemenway fishing point. Some fishermen are reeling in stripers with jigs and top-water baits. Catfish are also hitting throughout the lake. LAKE MOHAVE Big stripers have been taking bait at Willow Beach. A pair of boat anglers reeled in a mess of stripers that included three fish measuring from 29 to 37.5 inches in length. These fish were caught on top-water swimbaits in the early morning hours and not far from the marina. Trout fishermen have been doing well near the point where the hatchery outflow stream flows into the Colorado River. Flies, lures and PowerBait have been catching trout in the 12- to 14-inch range. One group of fishermen reportedly pulled in about 30 fish. Further south, both shore and boat anglers have found fair to good fishing near Cottonwood Cove. Morning hours are the most productive, but fish have been biting round the clock. Anglers have found success for stripers while trolling baits or still fishing. There have been report of both striped and largemouth bass taking spinner baits. Catfish as large as eight pounds have shown up on stringers as well. WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA Fishing has been slow at Adams McGill because water levels have been low and the water shallow. Trout tend to hold in the main channel and deeper water in this reservoir. Anglers have had some success for rainbows while fishing from the dams at Cold Springs and Haymeadow reservoirs. PowerBait in chartreuse or rainbow is the flavor of the week. URBAN PONDS The first trout plant of the year is scheduled for this week at the four urban ponds in the Las Vegas Valley. Because of the closure of the Lake Mead Fish Hatchery following the discovery of quagga mussels in the Colorado River system early this year, the trout will come from the Mason Valley Hatchery near Yerington. That will be the case until the Lake Mead Hatchery is reopened. The stocking schedule calls for plants every other week, but actual dates and times will be dependent on road conditions between Las Vegas and Mason Valley. Try small silver spinners, PowerBait or small worms. |
