Thanksgiving baskets

The Salvation Army is now accepting applications for the Thanksgiving food baskets and Christmas toys.

Thanksgiving food basket application deadline is Nov. 15, and for Christmas, application deadline is Dec. 15.

Pick up applications 10-3 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the Salvation Army Social Services Office, 240 S. Dahlia St. (next to the Thrift Store).

Quilts charity fund drive

Quilts 4 Cancer, a 501(c)(3) charity, is looking for people to share their sewing talent and basic quilting to make quilts for adults with cancer.

As supply costs skyrocket for shipping and handling, the charity is in great need of batting and backing.

In Nye County, many residents are being treated for cancer. If you want to donate a quilt, it should be at least 50 x 50 or larger, any pattern and color and should fit most home washers and dryers.

Pahrump area includes Beatty, Amargosa, Death Valley, Tonopah, Sandy Valley, Shoshone and Tecopa.

Veterans Day parade

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10054 is sponsoring a parade on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

The public is welcome to participate. Registration forms are available at the chamber of commerce, Saitta-Trudeau and the VFW Post, 4651 S. Homestead Road.

Marie Calandar pies for sale

The Nye County Cinderella Girls are selling Marie Calandar pies for Thanksgiving. The ordering deadline is Nov. 15.

Call Ashley Ditoto anytime at 751-2932. Pies can be picked up at 2 p.m., Nov. 21 in the Pahrump Nugget parking lot.

Amargosa Outing

The Amargosa Conservancy will have the third outing of the series Nov. 24 to Shoshone.

The group will meet at the Amargosa Conservancy office at 10 a.m. This is a walking tour through the historical railroad and mining town.

This tour is classified as full day, easy walking, 2 to 3 miles.

Outings are free, but suggested donations are $20 for half-day and $30 to $50 for full day excursions.

Junior Master Gardener

The 4-H is currently organizing a Junior Master Gardener group for youth ages 5-19.

Projects will include gardening in the Cooperative Extension Demonstration Garden, propagation, garden and nature related crafts, hydroponics, container gardening and food and nutrition.

Meetings start in November and will be held in the 4-H building located at 1351 E. Calvada Blvd.

Inyo County voters

All Inyo County voters will be voting on paper ballots in the Feb. 5, 2008 Presidential Primary.

The Inyo County Registrar of Voters is offering the opportunity to become a permanent absentee voter prior to the busy election year.

A permanent absentee voter automatically receives a ballot in the mail approximately three weeks before every election. The ballot can be returned by mail, delivered to the elections office in Independence or turned in to any Inyo County polling place until 8 p.m. on Election day.

As a permanent absentee voter, congestion can be avoided on election day.

Donations for California

Hay Burner Haven Equine Rescue, the SPCA, animal rescue operations and the people of Nye County have set up a drop point for donations for the animals victimized by the California fires.

Hay, straw, animal feed, salt blocks, buckets, grooming materials, tarps, rakes, shovels, medicines, lead ropes, leashes, mineral oil etc. would be useful and appreciated.

Items can be dropped at Shadow Mountain Feed, Wal-Mart, Windrock Feed Store and ACE Hardware.

Benefit sale

K-9 Castle is sponsoring a "howling good sale" to benefit the dogs and to help with "Kuma's" surgery.

There are movies, clothes, furniture and baked goods.

Entertainment will be provided.

Shoshone Old West Days

The annual Shoshone Old West Days will be Nov. 2-4 in the village of Shoshone.

There will be historical presentations, walking tours, crafts, food, entertainment and live music.

The festival opens at 4 p.m., Nov. 2.

The Shoshone Desert Art Show will be the weekend of Nov. 2-4 as well, and features artists from far and near who will come to participate.

The Art and Craft Show is 12- 5 p.m., Nov. 2, 9-5 p.m., Nov. 3 and 9-3 p.m., Nov. 3.

Mountain man rendezvous

There will be a mountain man competition Nov. 9-12 at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.

Watch trappers compete with muzzle load rifles and pistols, tomahawk throwing, knife, lance and shooting the Indian bow and use of an atlatl.

There will be a village of teepees lean-tos, trader tents and a raffle.

United Way banquet

The United Way of Pioneer Territory will present the 9th annual Cheers for Volunteers banquet at 6 p.m., Nov. 2 in the Saddle West convention center.

Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.

Black tie is suggested.

Tickets are $30 per person or $240 for a table of eight.

Space is limited and reservations can be made by calling 727-1193 or leave a message at 751-2400.

The celebration provides an opportunity for government, social service, nonprofit groups and private companies and citizens to nominate a special person or group for the Golden Heart Community Service Award.

Stargazing party

The Tecopa Hot Springs Resort will host the last star party of the season starting at dusk, Nov. 10 at the resort, 860 Tecopa Hot Springs Road.
