School board addresses Floyd issues
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
The Nye County School District Board traveled up to Gabbs for its regular meeting during which several measures furthering the completion of the Pahrump's new Floyd Elementary School were approved. The new elementary school will be built on Susquehanna and Jane Streets on 12 acres donated to the district by America West Homes. The board approved bonding for an additional $7 million to complete the project at its Oct. 18 meeting after a financial shortfall of $4,883,428 was assessed. In September, the board accepted a $16.3 million dollar bid from B&H Construction Co. Adding in a 6 percent architect cost, out of pocket expenses and change orders, the total cost of the project is $18,283,428, not including equipment and furniture. Superintendent Rob Roberts said the additional bond will not affect the construction schedule and expected a groundbreaking to take place within the first two weeks of November. The board also approved changing the future school's buildings from modulars to traditional "stick built" structures instead. The change will save the district $750,000 because this way the buildings can be built on site, whereas the modular supplier would be unable to build most of the structures in the factory where it would be cheaper in terms of wage rates. As a result, the modulars would have arrived without a floor or roof and sprinklers and HVACs would have to have been installed on-site, increasing the cost of construction. In addition, the modular supplier submitted a schedule that added 38 to 40 days to the district's schedule, making the district's 270-day deadline more difficult to meet. |
