The season is under way for the Pahrump Valley Senior Division Little League baseball team, as the boys split a series last week against the homestanding Las Vegas-based Red Rock Cardinals.

While the Trojans team is still forming -- Coach Brandon Bietar says he hopes to recruit one or two more players -- the 13 already-committed members went to Garside Middle School in Las Vegas, where they won the first game, but lost the second.

Bietar said the team's loss was the result of a combination of errors, which go in the record books, and "mental errors," which don't.

"It honestly was a game that we should have swept the series," he said. "We have a lot of talent, it's just getting these guys to play together and getting them used to the positions."

Talent, indeed. Catcher-infielder Ethan Wald was an honorable mention on the All-Nevada Class 3-A team for his efforts with the 2007 Pahrump Valley high school team. Wald also was an all-South second-team selection, as was infielder-pitcher Cody Nielsen. Pitcher-catcher Corey Veloz was an all-south honorable mention.

The roster also includes Daniel Cazier, Dominic Swidan, Tyler Lepley, Jarrett Holley, Eli Cline, Garret Darr, Kent Jasperson, Daniel Carter, Mike Gonzales and Ronnie Torres.

The team should be pretty well prepared for the season since they've been playing together all year on the Trojans, Bietar said. All of the players -- 15- and 16-year olds -- are on the high school club, some on varsity, some on the junior varsity. Still, the coach is employing some position changes, which takes some getting used to, he said.

The team will play a doubleheader tonight at Oxford Park in Las Vegas, taking on the Summerlin South Rangers in both games.

The PV team is to tangle with the Rangers again Saturday at Honeysuckle Park, with a twin bill beginning at 10 a.m.

Pahrump Valley is at Rainbow Park in Las Vegas June 6 to play the Red Rock Cardinals in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

The regular season is tentatively slated to conclude June 9, with a two-game set against the Cardinals at Honeysuckle Park, starting at 10 a.m. A twin bill against the A's, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed to a date to be announced.

Pahrump Valley's American Legion team is to open its season Saturday at Las Vegas with games against Eldorado at 5 and Henderson Foothill at 8, on the Eldorado High School field, 1139 North Linn Lane.
