FISHING
EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR Fishing activity has been high as anglers from Las Vegas try to escape the heat. Worms, PowerBait and spinners have all been producing fish, said Pete Gill, supervisor at Spring Valley State Park. Most of the action is for stocked rainbows, although fishermen have also been catching a few tiger trout. Some areas of the reservoir are beginning to see some moss growth. Nighttime temperatures are still dipping into the mid 20s, but the days are reaching into the high 70s to low 80s. ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR Anglers have been reeling in what one park ranger described as "nice-sized crappie," as well as largemouth bass and rainbow trout. They recently received another load of fish from the Nevada Department of Wildlife. PowerBait, worms, spinners and flies should all catch trout. Crappie and bass anglers may want to try jigs and plastic baits. LAKE MEAD Striped bass fishing has picked up substantially during the past week. Nevada Department of Wildlife creel clerks checked 234 stripers at one of the fish cleaning stations in one day. Most of those were caught in the Vegas Bay arm though shore anglers have also been catching some fish along the beaches. In the Overton arm fishermen are catching fish at in the vicinity of Ann Marguret beach and The Meadows. One trio of anglers had 35 stripers. Anglers have also been reeling in some catfish with much of the action coming in the Vegas Bay arm where some of the fish are reaching the three- to five-pound range. LAKE MOHAVE Striped bass have not been very cooperative for anglers and fishing is still slow. Only a handful of fish were caught over the weekend, and they came from various parts of the lake. Trolling, still-fishing from the bank and chucking hardware all produced fish, which weighed from two to four pounds. Channel cats are also starting to show up and have been taken on chicken livers and anchovies. Anglers pursuing largemouth bass have been doing well at Carp Cove, Katherine Landing and in the coves north of Cottonwood Cove. Some of the bigger fish weighed between three and five pounds. WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA Lots of fish and lots of people. That's the word from Kirch where anglers have been reeling in both rainbow trout and largemouth bass. The rainbows are averaging 15-16 inches in length and the bass are pushing 12. Fishing method doesn't seem to matter; fly-fishermen and bait fishermen are both doing well. Portions of the reservoirs are closed to protect nesting waterfowl, and area personnel are asking anglers to respect those closures. ATV operation is limited to existing roadways; off-road operation is prohibited on the Management Area. URBAN PONDS During the past week catfish were stocked into the ponds at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City, Hafen Park in Mesquite and Sunset Park, Lorenzi Park and Floyd Lamb State Park in the Las Vegas. When fishing for the whisker fish, give them something that smells. Try shrimp, chicken livers, stink baits or night crawlers and get them down toward the bottom. |
