LAS VEGAS -- Jason Odegard knew early in the spring, even before the Pahrump Valley boys' track team he coaches began workouts, that Dayton and Spring Creek could dominate the 2007 season.

Too much depth and too much experience would power the Dust Devils, while Spring Creek had enough athletes to give Dayton a run for the Nevada Class 3-A State championship.

"Still, the boys worked hard and won the Southern regional title," said Odegard, in his ninth season as the Trojans' head coach.

At the state 3-A championships contested Friday and Saturday at Del Sol High School in east Las Vegas, the Trojans compiled 72 points, to finish third behind Dayton (159 1/2) and Spring Creek (102 1/2).

Fernley had 68, Mesquite Virgin Valley 50, Boulder City 48, Truckee, Calif., 46, Las Vegas Faith Lutheran 45, North Tahoe 30, Winnemucca Lowry 28 1/2, Yerington 22 1/2, Overton Moapa Valley 21, Sparks 4 and Incline 4.

"Our boys had been dominant all during the season, winning our invitational, the invitational at Boulder City, and the Heitkotter at Faith Lutheran," said Odegard. "And they did well at the (Las Vegas) Classic.

"But we knew that with Northern teams getting five entries for the state meet and the South getting three in each event, that we would have a tough time winning state."

Dayton scored 18 points in the 100-meter dash, 16 in the 200, 14 in the 400, eight in the 110-meter high hurdles, nine in the 300 hurdles, a total of 26 in the four relay races, and 68 1/2 in the field events to claim the team championship.

Kyle Mills, a junior, won the triple jump for Pahrump Valley, hop, skip and jumping 46 feet, 3 1/4 inches.

"We (coach Odegard and Mills) talked early in the season that I would like to hit 50 feet in my senior year," said Mills. "He told me I would have to get to 46 feet this season, since I did 42-4 last year."

Mills actually had three jumps in excess of the state 3-A record, but because of a quartering wind of 3.3 meters per second, none of those attempts (45 1 1/4 and 45-7, as well as the 46-3 1/4) counted.

Pahrump Valley boys points came from:

Mills, second, 21-8 1/2 in the long jump;

4x100-meter relay, third, 0:45.18;

4x200 relay, third, 1:33.09;

4x400 relay, eighth, 3:39.62;

4x800 relay, sixth, 8:53.19;

Sergio Castro, eighth, 800, 2:04.74;

Devin Schneider, seventh, 110-meter high hurdles, 0:18.31;

Rocky Spencer, third, 100, 0:11.33;

Spencer, second, 200, 0:23.01;

Castro, second, 400, 0:50.75;

Steve Cummings, fourth, shot put, 45-4 1/2;

Reynaldo Veloz, third, discus, 134-11.
