Yucca Mountain

You reported that Gary Hollis wants to ride into the nuclear waste depository with the first shipment when it opens.

I would rather see Mr. Hollis ride the first shipment into the re-cycling center that the Department of Energy must build eventually. France and Japan re-cycle their nuclear waste as well as taking some of ours. Then France re-sold our waste back to us as fuel rods.

That seems to make a lot more sense than storing it in a hole in the ground which will fill up and then another site must be found.

Deep down, I really feel that Mr. Hollis is afraid that if the Yucca Mountain poison pit is closed, the PETT Funds which Nye County has come to rely on will dry up and people will start to wonder what happened to the taxes we are paying.

You can't have it both ways

After reading "Liakopoulos suggests ban on guns at meetings" in your May 18th edition, I wonder if the recent tragedies at Virginia Tech, the Utah mall, and Columbine High School are lost on Mr. Liakopoulos. Do otherwise intelligent people suddenly go brain dead when they take office?

Banning guns from a meeting place, from a university, from a mall, or even from a high school will never, I repeat never, stop a criminal from enacting his horror upon unarmed people. Quite the opposite. These are the very places that these crazed criminals seek out since they know there will be no opposition to their horrific plan. Have you ever heard of a mass shooting at a gun show? How about 20 miles down highway 160 at Front Sight? How far do you suppose some lunatic would get there?

No, Mr. Liakopoulos, this has been tried over and over with the same predictable and fatal results. You see, all the laws in the world didn't keep the Virginia Tech killer away now did they? Do you think a madman at one of our local meetings would be any different? Would a sign on the door to the Bob Ruud Community Center cause him to turn around and go back home? We all know the answer to that question.

And just because someone at the meeting was ill-tempered and happened to have a sidearm doesn't mean he's about to start shooting up the place. I carry my handgun everywhere I go, but do you think I start shooting just because someone cuts me off in traffic? Hardly.

And lastly, for Mr. Liakopoulos to say that he is "pro-gun" or supports the Second Amendment, after spouting such viewpoints is about as believable as someone saying he supports "civil rights" but still believes that all blacks should ride in the back of the bus. You can't have it both ways Mr. Commissioner. Make up your mind.

We owe them

"Red Hat Members on the Go" gave a large contribution to the troops overseas.

We owe them so much for their service and want them to know we miss them.

Not enough words

There are not enough words to express a proper thank you to the people of Pahrump.

The fire department: Although our home could not be saved, they did save the small trailer my daughter Sandi had just moved into and the storage sheds. Good job.

They also rescued one of our beloved pets. Thank you from "Calli."

The Red Cross was right there with support. Thank you.

Valley Electric responded quickly to get us power for the small trailer and well pump. Thank you.

Thank you John from Mental Health for being there for Sandi.

Many thanks to the Methodist Church for all the assistance with clothing and food box.

Pahrump Arts Council, fellow members, you not only have a love of the arts, you also have the art of caring for others.

Special thanks to Doris Smith who made sure our beloved pet Calli received medical treatment.

Mikel Frazier, for being there with Sandi.

Oscar Demase and his wonderful family for helping to get us through that first day.

Doug and Toni Glynn, your assistance and friendship will never be forgotten.

Frank and Arleen, the family support, above and beyond.

Bob Baker for getting a clean-up arranged and the men doing that "dirty work," many, many thanks.

Vincent Gerhardt and Thomas Powell, two very thoughtful young boys, you are both in our hearts forever.

Bernie and Janet Toy, Jan Lindsey, Margie Hartley, J.B. and Julie Gerhardt, Fritzi Cox, Carol McGovern and others I may have missed, God bless all of you.

Thank you all.

A danger to all

Call me the flag lady if you like. I want action.

The lines on the state highways 160 and 372 that extend through the center of our darling town are almost extinct.

I have been begging NDOT via Las Vegas and Carson City for months and months. But what can a female flag lady do alone?

Recently, I talked to a man at NDOT in Carson City and asked that, if I presented him with 1,000 signatures asking to repaint the lines, would that do any good?

"It might," he said.

So, I have made up and had printed 500 copies of my "begging" petition in order to accomplish this. And, I need help getting signatures.

I have sat in front of Wal-Mart several times (very cooperative manager), with my card table, chair and petition but it may take years to get 1,000 signatures.

You do not have to be a resident to sign, you only have to be a licensed driver. I have signatures from visitors, truck drivers and teenagers.

If you could take a couple of pages to fill, I would really appreciate your assistance ... signed.

The female flag lady with a card table. But, I could bring a flag. Please give me a call at 751-2769 if you can help me at all. Thanks.
