Who Memorial Day is all about
This is quite a month for military related events, with both Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day holding place as well as anniversaries ranging from that of the 1863 battle of Chancellorsville to the 1954 defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu to the opening of the German attack on the Low Countries and...OK, here we are again...France in 1940 to the May Offensive in South Vietnam in 1968 and so on.

Worst president ever? It just depends
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock has a full-time religion writer. Jimmy Carter is a full-time religious man who happens to be promoting audiobooks of his Sunday school lessons at his Baptist church in Plains.


Where does the government stand?
WASHINGTON -- Compromise is incessantly praised, and has produced the proposed immigration legislation. But compromise is the mother of complexity, which, regarding immigration, virtually guarantees -- as the public understands -- weak enforcement and noncompliance.

As we hit the road Memorial Day weekend to visit with family and friends and enjoy the outdoors, beware the roadside stands and farmers markets. Visit them, by all means. Pick up fresh veggies for the grill, herbs and annuals for the garden and a fresh bouquet for the table. But be careful not to fall into the trap of extreme optimism.
