Writing contest

The Oasis Writers' Guild of Pahrump is holding a writing contest for the public (non-members of the guild); the winner will receive $25.

Tutors needed for Pathways

The Pathways program needs tutors in mathematics. In addition, tutors are needed for language arts in the areas of grammar and vocabulary.

Wall of Heroes

Prescription meds assistance

Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance.

Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies.

Pick up cards at pharmacies or stop by Nye County Health and Human Services, located at 250 N. Highway 160, Ste. 4, or call 751-7095.

The Nye County School District volunteer coordinator's office is looking for an assistant; duties include meeting people and helping to place volunteers where they are needed.

Veterans ceremony

PAC auditions

"The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," will show Nov. 9 through 17 (rehearsals start in September). "The Spitfire Grill," a musical, will show March 7-15, 2008 (rehearsals start in January, 2008).

Manse Elementary registration

Manse Elementary School will continue pre-registration for kindergarten students through June 7. Kindergarten registration will then resume June 15 and continue until June 25. Fall registration for kindergarten through the fifth grade will begin Aug. 6.

Home school bowling

The Pahrump Home School Bowling League is now taking sign ups for the summer bowling season, which will begin June 8 and end Aug. 17 and meet at 9 a.m. at the Pahrump Nugget bowling center.

The Home School Bowling League accepts home-schooled children from 3 and a half to 17 at any bowling skill level with parental consent. There are no tryouts; it is a friendly league and all who participate will receive a trophy at the end of the season. The summer season will cost $65 per bowler for the entire season.

Ms. Senior Golden Years pageant

The Ms. Senior Golden Years U.S.A. pageant will be held at 7 p.m. June 9 in the Saddle West Casino showroom.

Summer dance sessions

Summer games

The upcoming Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Summer Games Program will begin June 18 (the week after school ends June 11), Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon in the Rosemary Clarke Middle School cafeteria.

The Nye County Sheriff's Office will hire qualified teachers, staff and student employees throughout the summer who would like participate in this "G.R.E.A.T." opportunity.

Exchange students host homes needed

DM Discoveries, a government-monitored exchange student program, is seeking host families in Nye County and the surrounding areas for foreign exchange students due to arrive in August for the 2007-08 school year.

Each student has full medical coverage, pocket money and has expressed a true desire to become a participating member of an American family - pitching in on everything from household chores to family discussions.

The Pahrump Valley Rough Riders' Gymkhana event will be held at 6 p.m. June 16 at McCullough arena.

Amateur radio raffle

Southern Nye County Amateur Radio Emergency Service Inc., is hosting a raffle to raise funds for the group.

Prizes include: One $100 gift certificate at Smith's Grocery, one $50 gift certificate at Smith's Grocery, one $50 gift certificate at Wal-Mart, a free car wash at Carbucks and assorted hand-made gifts donated by club members.

Winners will be notified by phone and do not need to be present in order to win. The drawing will be June 24 at 11 a.m. during the ARRL "field day," which is scheduled the weekend of June 23 and 24 in the parking lot of the Pahrump Nugget Hotel & Casino.

Lutheran church jewelry sale

A van is available to veterans needing transportation to the Veterans Administration Clinic in Pahrump.

Salvation Army Bible School

The Salvation Army's Vacation Bible School, for all children ages 5 through 14, will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. June 13-15 at the Salvation Army Church grounds (The Manor), 721 S. Buol Road.

Registration is $5 per child. Registration forms are available at the Social Services Office, located at the Salvation Army Thrift Store on Dahlia Street.

Traci Ann cancer fund

Long-time Pahrump residents Jim and Jo Thorne's daughter Traci Ann has been battling cancer for some time. Due to the overwhelming medical expenses they have endured, an account has been set up at Bank of America to help them. Any donations will be very welcome.

The account is under the name of "Traci Ann Pokelsek-Baarsma Medical Fund."

Kiwanis yard sale

The Kiwanis Club of Pahrump Valley will hold a yard sale, starting at 7:30 a.m. June 8 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Donations may be dropped off at Kaye's Allstate in the Albertson's shopping center or call Marianne at 209-3752.

Proceeds will go into the club's 501(c)3 foundation for various community projects.

Mental health open house

Pahrump Mental Health will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at 240 S. Humahuaca. May is Mental Health Month.

Stardust Chapter No. 32

Stardust Chapter No. 32, at its May meeting, held a private memorial service for Alice Irene Ling, who died April 27 in Portland, Ore. A public memorial will be held at the Masonic Memorial Temple in September.

Early Childhood screening

The Nye County School District has a responsibility to locate, assess and identify children ages 3-5 who are not enrolled in any school program and who may have some kind of developmental delays.

If your child is currently being served through Nevada Early Intervention, contact the district about 90 days prior to your child turning 3 years of age.

Beta XI Chapter garage sale

The first annual garage sale of the Beta XI Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 1871 S. Burgundy Drive in the Winery Road area, off Highway 160. Look for signs.

New and gently used household goods, clothing, toys and more will be available.

Digital photography exhibit class

The Pahrump Arts Council presents Great Basin College's digital photography exhibit class, entitled "In the Moment," from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 401 E. Basin Ave.

Sweet vets memorial

The G.G. Sweet Veterans Memorial Park will host its annual Memorial Day Service and Support Our Troops activities at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the park and museum, located at the corner of Gamebird Road and Money Street.

The Pahrump Valley High School ROTC unit, the Basic High School JMCROTC silent drill teams of Henderson and the Las Vegas Marine Corps Reserve Honor Guard are scheduled to participate.

The museum will be open to the public at the conclusion of the 45 minute program.

Quilts 4 Cancer

The Quilts 4 Cancer office will be closed during the month of May. Director Barb Johnston will be attending cancer-related events and lobbying for additional funding. Johnston asks that people wait until June to contact her as she will have limited email access while she is out of state.

Pahrump Gunfighters

The Pahrump Gunfighters will perform Western skits and re-enactments at 1 p.m. Sunday at Dusty Flats, next to Charlie's Place (formerly Our Bar), 3770 West Bell Vista.

Scholarships for local students

The Southern Nye County Conservation District is sponsoring two $500 scholarships; one for a Pahrump area student and one for a Beatty area student (which includes Amargosa Valley). These scholarships also encompass Pathways and special education kids.

The criteria for scholarships is as follows: grade ranking; preference for students considering any field applying to conservation; being actively enrolled in a university, college or vocational school; be graduates from the southern Nye County school district; a 300 to 500 narrative with application describing how field of choice relates to conservation; and be a U.S. citizen living in southern Nye County.

All Red Hat chapters

The Pahrump Valley Red Hatters are inviting all 15 Red Hat chapters in Pahrump for a "Shopping Pahrump" day, to begin at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Many businesses will be expecting a visit by ladies wearing Red Hats and many will offer special discounts for the day or raffle drawings. Start the day by picking up a list at Sunflower Fashions, 1230 S. Loop at 10 a.m. Copies of the list will be available throughout the day, so shopping can start anytime during the day.

VEA youth camp

All high school sophomores and juniors are invited to join Valley Electric Association's Y.E.S. (Youth Energy Seminar) camp this summer (June/July) at Boreal Ridge, Calif.

Girls scouts collection drive

Girl Scout Troop No. 216 will be collecting donated toiletries for Safe Place in front of Wal-Mart from 5-7 p.m. today.

Items needed are all sizes of toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, soap or body wash and lotion.

Pahrump Senior Center fundraiser

The Pahrump Valley Lions Club, in conjunction with the Pahrump Senior Center, will host a Senior Center Country Night June 1 at the Saddle West Hotel. All proceeds will benefit the senior center.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Music will be provided by the County Line Band.

Tickets are $25 each or $150 for a reserved table of six. Tickets and tables may be purchased at Realty Executives; ReMax Realty; Win Realty; the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce; the senior center; or from any Pahrump Valley Lion.

Daughters of Mary fish dinner

The Daughters of Mary will hold a fish dinner from 4-7 p.m. June 1 in the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church hall at 781 E. Gamebird Road.

Fried or baked fish, as well as homemade desserts will be available. The dinner is dine in or take out.

School program

The eighth annual Stand for Children Day/Teacher of the Year Program will be held at 9 a.m. June 2 at Rosemary Clarke Middle School.

The program will include breakfast, Teacher of the Year awards from each Pahrump school and all-youth entertainment.

Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased by calling St. Martin's Episcopal Church (537-11150 or the Nye Communities Coalition (727-9970).

Veterans office closed

The County Veterans Service Office will be closed for the week of June 4 through June 8. The office employees will be attending training.

AYSO registration

AYSO 2007 registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 2; 6-8 p.m. June 13; and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 30.

Players born between Aug. 1, 1988, and July 31, 2003, are eligible to sign up. A copy of the child's birth certificate must be brought to registration. You can also pre-register your child at www.eayso.org.

Senior Companions

Low-income seniors age 60 or over can earn $212 a month, tax-free, by volunteering for Senior Companions, a program that provides companionship, socialization and transportation to other seniors who have difficulty with daily living tasks.

The program is operated by Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada.
